Tigers Roll into February with Five Game Winning Streak

The Hargrave Military Academy Varsity Basketball team finished January on a tear, winning five straight games, four of which were away from Chatham. The Tigers continued their winning ways this past week with a pair of wins over Miller School of Albemarle on Tuesday, 82-79, and Northside Christian Academy on Thursday, 73-66. Hargrave currently sits at 12-4 overall and 1-2 in VIC conference play.

In a tightly contested game between top-five teams in VISAA Division 2, Hargrave utilized an early 9-2 run to boost the energy level in Walter Davis Gymnasium. Hargrave, currently ranked #5 in the latest VISAA Division 2 poll, was able to hold that lead until midway through the fourth quarter, when a deep three pointer from Miller, currently ranked #1, tied the game at 66-66. Benson Lin ’18 made tough play after tough play down the stretch, scoring 7 of his game high 26 points in the final four minutes of the game to give Hargrave the upset victory over a very talented and greatly coached Miller squad. The win also gave the Tigers their first VIC conference win of the season.

Thursday February 1st

The Tigers opened up February with a well-earned, grind-it-out type of victory on Thursday evening down in Charlotte, North Carolina. Hargrave shot over 50% from the field for the second straight game and utilized a strong defensive effort to propel them to victory. Playing shorthanded, the Tigers earned big contributions from everyone, including 25 points from Benson Lin, and incredible two way play from Korbin Spencer, Matt Brown, Jr. and Gil Brown, II. IJ Ezuma stepped up in a big way and provided a much needed defensive lift in the second quarter, blocking four shots and grabbing key rebounds. The win gave the Tigers their longest winning streak of the season, which currently sits at five games.

The Tigers will be back in action on Tuesday, February 6th to begin a string of home games to close out the regular season with four of their last five scheduled to be played at Walter Davis Gymnasium. Hargrave welcomes Virginia Episcopal School to Chatham in a VIC conference game on February 6th, tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 PM.
