Hargrave’s PG Basketball program has been an extremely lauded and successful programs for several decades and their trophy case has recently earned a few new additions, including the Elite Prep League (EPL) regular season and tournament championship trophies! The Tigers finished the regular season in the EPL with a 5-1 record, earning them the #1 seed in the conference tournament and a bye to the eventual championship game.
During the championship game, which featured an incredible rivalry game between Hargrave and Massanutten, the Tigers had an opportunity to avenge their lone loss from this season. Hargrave controlled the pace of the game with their frenetic defensive pressure and high flying offensive tempo but were never able to fully pull away from Massanutten, who shot an astonishing 65% from behind the three point arc in the second half to stay within striking distance. Ultimately Hargrave triumphed 109-106, avenging their only loss and in the process, taking home the EPL Conference Tournament title! The Tigers were bolstered with standout performances from Kailon Nicholls, De’Shayne Montgomery, and Diovion Famakinde, as well as some crucial minutes and made free throws (6-6 from the charity stripe) by Mike Montano down the stretch to earn the win! Hargrave was also honored with several conference awards, including EPL Player of the Year, Jaden Daughtry (Indiana State signee), and EPL Coach of the Year, Thomas Messinger! Additionally, Kailon Nicholls (All-EPL First Team), Diovion Famakinde (All-EPL Second Team), and De’Shayne Montgomery (All-EPL Honorable Mention) were all recognized for their achievements thus far this season!
