Tigers Tie in Season Opener

Jeremy Eubank

The Tigers opened up their 2018 season on Friday afternoon against Roanoke Valley Christian at Simpson Parade Field. After a well-played match, the contest ended in a 1-1 draw.

The Eagles of Roanoke Valley Christian got on the board first with a goal in the 15th minute, capitalizing on an early Hargrave mistake. Hargrave continued to push the pace following the early goal, and put a lot of pressure on Roanoke Valley Christian as the Tigers outshot the Eagles 7-1 to end the first half. When asked his thoughts on the first half, Coach Jeremy Eubank said, “With eight new starters this year we know that is is going to take time to get used to playing with one another.”

As the match continued late into the second half, the stands at Simpson Parade Field were filled with supportive fans and Hargrave’s Corps of Cadets and the Tigers were able to feed off that energy. In the 78th minute, the Tigers were able to equalize on a beautiful corner kick from senior Chad Demarest that was finished by junior Daniel Pierce. After knocking on the door for the entire match, the Tigers utilized some late game heroics to come away with the draw. “It was good to see that we were able to carry the momentum that we had built from the first half to the second half,” Eubank said. “Learning how to play in our system takes time and we made some great strides today.”
