Tigers Torch Nets in Season Opening Victory

Benjamin J Veshi

On Saturday afternoon, the Hargrave Tigers opened their season with a matchup against the Gryphons on New Covenant. Hargrave earned a 65-25 victory and moved to 1-0 on the season.

Hargrave’s historic Walter Davis Gymnasium was teeming with excitement as the JV Basketball squad kicked off their season as part of afternoon triple-header of Hargrave hoops. Naturally, the Tigers had to shake off some rust but when they did, it was an impressive sight to see as Hargrave built an early advantage with a three point barrage from sophomore Roger Adams (Chatham, VA), freshman Ashton Hammock (Dry Fork, VA), and 8th grader Teddy Hoffman (Boca Raton, FL).

The Tigers hot shooting and stalwart defense earned them an opening 65-25 victory over intraconference opponent, New Covenant. Head Coach Luis Zerpa noted after the game, “The team has worked hard in practice (over the past few weeks) in preparation for this game. These young men played with great determination and showed an awesome level of teamwork and sportsmanship. We are just so thankful to be able to play basketball in these uncertain times!”

Notable Performances Included:
Roger Adams ’23–15 points
Teddy Hoffman ’25–13 points
Elijah Bridges ’24–12 points
Logan Rader ’23–7 points
Stephen Scearce ’22–6 points
Ashton Hammock ’24–6 points

The Tigers intend to be back in action the weekend of January 22nd-23rd as they take on Fork Union Military Academy in a back to back. As always, the schedule is subject to change but continue to check the Hargrave Athletics website for the most up to date information.
