Tre King Commits to Eastern Kentucky

One of the most hotly recruited prospects from the 2018-19 Hargrave Military Academy postgraduate basketball team is officially off the board. Tre King, a 6’8″ forward from Lexington, Kentucky has ended his recruitment and committed to Eastern Kentucky University where he will unite with former Hargrave Head Coach and current EKU head coach, A.W. Hamilton.

King started all 37 games for the Tigers this season, helping the team to a 33-4 record and a #4 national ranking in the year-end poll. He averaged 14.4 points, 8.7 rebounds, 1.4 blocks, and led the team with 2.9 steals per game. Tre filled the stat sheet on a regular basis for the Tigers, and he flirted with a rare points-rebounds-steals triple double twice (16 points, 14 rebounds, 8 steals in one contest, 20 points, 11 rebounds, 9 steals in another). Tre saw his recruitment explode over the course of the year, and selected EKU over Louisiana Tech, Marshall, Murray State, St. Bonaventure, Old Dominion and a host of other programs that were vying for his talents.

“Tre is one of the most versatile players that we have seen in a long time,” commented Hargrave Head Coach Lee Martin. “His ability to defend multiple positions on the defensive end combined with his mobility and skillset on the offensive end will cause a lot of matchup problems at the next level. Tre is going to flourish under Coach Hamilton, and I have no doubt that he will help lead them back to the NCAA Tournament in the years to come.”

King transferred to Hargrave after his Junior season, captaining the varsity team at  Hargrave during the 2016-2017 season. That team set a school record for wins in a season with 26 wins and also captured the school’s first conference title in the modern era. Tre posted a stat line of 15.3 points, 8.9 rebounds, 2.4 blocks (team-leading) and 2.1 steals per game during his senior season. He posted double-doubles in in 12 games, including 4 20-point, 10-rebound efforts as well as a run where he posted double-doubles in each of the Tigers’ Virginia Independent Conference tournament games, earning 1st team all-tournament honors along the way. Tre was also named to the 1st Team All Virginia Independent Conference and to the Toyota Classic All Academic Team during his senior season.

Tre finished his two seasons at Hargrave with a total cumulative record of 59-8 and has been a staple of the Hargrave community off the court. He has collected numerous academic awards, including selection to the Dean’s list or President’s list each marking period during his Hargrave tenure and has also held multiple positions in student leadership.

Hargrave’s head varsity coach, Ben Veshi, added, “Tre King is a shining example of a well-rounded student athlete. He will make a positive impact on the EKU basketball team, as well as the Richmond community as soon as he arrives on campus.”
