Umali’s Hat Trick Helps JV Tigers Earn A Tough Win

On a perfect early autumn afternoon, at the home pitch of Hargrave Academy, the JV Soccer team hosted the Chiefs from Carlisle School.

From the kickoff, the Tigers set the tempo of the game by playing a strong defense that was led by talented goalkeeper, Cadet J. Ratchford.  The Fullbacks of Cadets E. Hanson, D. Ma, Z. Li, and C. Henretta also set the tone by their solid play.  The midfield was controlled by Cadets N. Brown, M. Dixon and A. White. On the wings were speedy C. Elliot and E. King. Cadet Chen was in the utility role by being capable of playing many positions and giving his teammates much needed breaks. The strikers were Cadets, E. Umali, G. O’Connor, and C. Roe.

Carlisle was a formidable opponent by displaying great technique and by their ability to pass the ball well. The Tigers were able to disrupt this passing game to create numerous opportunities that resulted in a goal early on.

In what could be described as one of the most beautiful plays this year, Cadet David Chen took a ball up the right-wing passing two defenders and made a precise pass to Umali in the 18. Umali did not waste the opportunity and scored one of his three goals on the afternoon for a “hat trick.” The other goal was delivered from Ratchford, as he was relieved from being a goalkeeper to prove he can also get things done on the field.

Great job Tigers!
