Hargrave Military Academy’s Hargrave Aquatics swimming team had a very successful meet at the 2004 SWAT (Southwest Aquatic Team) Thanksgiving Invitational, November 12-14, 2004. The team took 3rd overall with 1,564 points out of fifteen teams attending. In addition to many Virginia teams, teams from North Carolina, Tennessee and Maryland also participated.
Hargrave Aquatics’ male swimmers placed third for the men with 895.5 points. The team’s female athletes placed sixth for the women with 668.5 points.
Four athletes on the team broke eight club team records, which are increasingly harder to break.
Andrew Hetzner, age 18, from Riverside, California, set three new records for Senior men in the 100y Freestyle, 48.21, 100y Backstroke, 53.74, and the 200y Backstroke, 1:56.93. He also placed first in both the 100y and 200y backstroke events at the meet and took 2nd in the 100y Freestyle, 2nd in the 100y Butterfly, 53.01, 3rd in the 500y Freestyle, 4:45.24, and 4th in the 50y Freestyle, 22.81. Hetzner is a U.S. Naval Academy swimming prospect.
Jacob Conner, age 14, from Danville, Virginia, set two new 13-14 boys team records in the 500y Freestyle, 5:10.93, and 200y Backstroke, 2:17.51. Conner’s 500y Freestyle placed him 2nd at Radford. He was also 3rd in the 1,000y Freestyle, 10:41.28, 4th in the 200y Backstroke, 5th 200y Freestyle, 1:59.22, and 6th 100y Freestyle, 55.60.
Jennifer Murphy, age 12, of Altavista, Virginia, continued to be a major factor in the Breaststroke events. She set two new 11-12 Girls team records in the 100y Breaststroke, 1:15.64, and 200y Breaststroke, 2:46.86. She was 1st in the 50y Breaststroke, 35.73, 1st in the 100y Breaststroke and 2nd in the 200y Breaststroke. She also claimed six in the 50y Freestyle, 28.58, 7th in the 100y Individual Medley (IM), 1:12.57, and 8th in the 100y Freestyle, 1:02.98.
Jesse Conner, age 10, of Danville, Virginia, set one new club record in the 10&Under Boys 100y Backstroke, 1:13.58. He placed 1st 500y Freestyle, 6:00.23, 2nd 100y Freestyle, 1:06.47, 2nd 50y Backstroke, 35.61, 2nd in the 100y Backstroke, 4th in the 200y IM, 2:44.09, and 5th in the 100y IM, 1:19.48.
“Our Hargrave Aquatics team swam very well throughout the month of November,” said Hargrave Aquatics Head Coach Scott Bowser. “There were many outstanding swims. We were extremely pleased with our finish, the highest finish the team has ever had at this meet.”
Two other Hargrave Aquatics athletes also took top honors in several events. Lauren Hines, age 14, of Forest, Virginia, claimed 1st in three 13-14 Girl events. She was 1st 50y Freestyle, 24.96, 1st in the 100y Freestyle, 54.38, 1st 200y Freestyle, 2:00.18, and 1st in the 100y Backstroke, 1:02.03. She also placed 3rd in the 500y Freestyle, 5:32.13, and 5th in the 100y Butterfly, 1:04.92.
Jessica Abbott, age 12, from Republican Grove, Virginia, took 1st in the 100y Freestyle, 59.22, and 1st in the 500y Freestyle, 5:32.71. She was also 2nd in the 200y Freestyle, 2:07.24, 2nd 100y Backstroke, 1:09.05, 2nd 100y IM, 1:09.32, 3rd 200y IM, 2:28.20, and 4th in the 50y Freestyle, 28.10.
The team looks forward to its first home meet of the season, the Super Senior Shootout, on December 10-12, 2004. The team hopes to conclude the year, and the first part of its winter season, with some of its best swims.
