USA Swimming vs. Virginia Swimming’s 2005 Senior Championship

Hargrave Aquatics went to Senior state Championship this weekend and placed 15th overall and 12th in men’s competition. Hargrave took five men swimming a full slate of events and two women swimming one event each. The women will also compete this coming weekend at the 14 and under statewide Age Group championship meet. The two 14 and Under girls had senior cuts and wanted to see what they could do against senior women in their best event.

Overall, the team swam very well breaking seven team records and posting 15 lifetimes best swims. Some highlights of the meet include Cadet Mike Wheeler making the Virginia Zone team. To make this team, an athlete must finish first or second in the state without making a Sectional Qualifying time or faster. Mike ended the meet placing first on the Zone list. We all wish Mike good luck at Zones. He will be traveling with about 90 other kids from the state of Virginia ranging in ages from 9-18 and swimming against the 12 other Zone teams in a 13 state area. Go Virginia and Go Mike.

Cadet Andrew Hetzner and Lauren Hines both swam their first JR National Qualifying times at this meet. This will give them the chance to represent Hargrave in Orlando and swim the nation’s best 18 and under swimmers. They will depart on March 22nd and returning on March 27th.

This meet will include swimmers from every state as well as some from other countries. Lauren made her cut in the 50 Freestyle and has earned the right to swim the 50 Backstroke and 100Freestyle. Lauren went 24.50 in the 50 Freestyle and placed 7th overall in the senior meet. She will go into the 14 and under Age Group championship this weekend as the number one seed. Good luck Lauren.

Andrew made his cut in the 200 Backstroke going 1:53.91. This broke graduate Robert Quicke’s record of 1:57.84 set in 2002.

Andrew has also earned the right to swim the 100 Fly and the 100 Back. He also set new records in both of those events going 52.20 in the 100 Fly, breaking graduate Jay Smith’s record of 52.68, and the 100 Back going 53.37, breaking Robert Quicke’s mark of 54.28. Good luck Andrew.
