Varsity Baseball score big win over Covenant

Coach Brett Thomas

The Hargrave varsity baseball team improved to 2-0 on the young season defeating The Covenant school Thursday evening in Charlottesville, Virginia. Hargrave fought, showed tremendous poise, determination and will to knock off a very solid Covenant team by a score of 6-5. Hargrave had control all 7 innings, a few miscues here and there caused the game to be a lot closer than it should have been.

Cadet Matt Harris got things started in the top of the first inning, getting hit by an inside fastball then stealing a base before a Cadet Keegan Ferer base hit to take an early 1-0 lead. Harris got things rolling again in the top of the third inning with another hit by pitch. Ferer laid down a perfect bunt for a base hit moving Harris to third base. Cadet Darrell Smith got in on the action hitting a rocket to the second base that Ferer could not get away from leading to our first out of the frame but still keeping runners on first and third. A stolen base by Smith and a bad throw by Covenant catcher brought in Harris from third base putting Hargrave ahead 2-0. After tying the game at 2, Cadet Riggs Jordan started the fourth inning with a single through the left side, followed by a stolen base and a walk by Cadet Mack Long and a single by Harris, Smith hit another base hit bringing in Jordan. Cadet Zach Ruffin continued his stellar plate discipline drawing a bases loaded walk bringing in Long to end the fourth inning. Hargrave added another run in the fifth when Jordan jumped on a fastball sending it over the left field fence for his first home run of the season. Hargrave added another run in the sixth inning on another Smith RBI putting Hargrave ahead 6-3 going into the seventh inning. Covenant scratched a few runs in their half of the sixth inning but an unassisted double play by Cadet Nick Paul ended that rally, and put the game away.

Cadet Brad Markiewicz started on the bump for the Tigers going 5 1/3 innings allowing 4 hits, no earned runs and striking out 4 Covenant hitters. Harris pitched the last 1 2/3 innings shutting the door on an impressive win for you’re Tigers baseball team. Harris finished the day 1-3 with 2 runs scored, Ferer was 2-2 with a stolen base, Smith was 2-4 with 2 RBI’s, and Jordan was 2-2 with a home run, 2 runs scored and an RBI.

The Tigers return to action on Tuesday 3/17 at home against Westover at 4:30pm. We hope to see all of you out there.
