The varsity baseball team improved to 8-3 on the season with a big win over rival Fork Union yesterday afternoon by the score of 12-11. Hargrave showed great grit, great motivation and above all a ton of heart to come out victorious Thursday. The guys battled through adversity from start to finish in what made for one of the most exciting games I have been apart of here at Hargrave.
The game was back and forth for the majority with Hargrave scoring 3 runs in the first, FUMA scoring 1, in the second Hargrave scored 1 and FUMA scored 5. Hargrave scored 3 in the 3rd and FUMA scored 0. FUMA ran 4 runs across in the 4th and Hargrave scored 0. In the 5th Hargrave scored 0 and FUMA added 1. Going into the top of the 6th inning, Hargrave was down 11-7 with our 9 hole hitter leading things off… Cadet Kristian Ragland.
Ragland drew a walk while Cadet Matt Harris come to the plate and laced his third hit of the game. Cadet Keegan Ferer came to bat and hit a sharp single through the middle. With the bases loaded, Cadets Darrell Smith and Harry Crosby drew two huge walks bringing runners across to put the score at 11-9. Cadet Zach Ruffin stepped in with the bases juiced and with two strikes, connected with a fastball and sent it deep to right center field off the wall for a stand up double and 3 RBI including the tying and go ahead runs. FUMA could get nothing going in their half of the 6th or 7th with a strong pitching performance out of the pen from Cadet Riggs Jordan to shut the door on an exciting game.
Harris finished 3-4. Ferer was 2-3. Smith was 2-3 with 3 RBI’s. Cadet Brad Markiewicz finished 2-4. Ruffin finished 1-2 with three big RBI’s.
