Varsity Baseball Wins Last Regular Season Game

Brett Thomas

The Hargrave Varsity baseball team won their final regular season game yesterday 5-4, over conference undefeated and second ranked team in the state, Miller School. This was by far the most well played game by the baseball team all season. The heart and the will to win was off the charts and they look for this to propel them into conference tournament play starting today.

With Hargrave ahead 3-2 going into Miller’s half of the 7th inning, two walks, and a perfect bunt lead to bases loaded and no outs for Miller. Two sacrifice fly’s later, Miller took the lead 4-3. In the bottom of the 7th inning, Hargrave led off the inning with a walk by Laforgia, followed by Jim Woods’ sacrifice bunt which put Laforgia in scoring position. Two walks later, with the bases loaded, Mark Loving got a single through the left side to tie the game 4-4, bringing senior Brad Markiewicz to the plate. With the count full, Markiewicz got a fast ball and hit a sharp line drive to centerfield to get the game winning run and give Hargrave its 7th conference win of  the  season. Hargrave finished conference play 7-2, 15-7 overall, and will host the first round of the conference tournament this afternoon at 5 PM.
