The Tigers opened the season at the Robert Thomas Memorial basketball tournament at Virginia Episcopal School. The opening round game was played against E.C. Glass High School on Friday night. Hargrave jumped out to an 18-12 first quarter lead behind hot shooting by Javonte Rankin. Glass came back to take a three point lead by half time. In an exciting second half, the lead exchanged hands several times. Turnovers doomed the Tigers as they fell behind in the last minute and Glass was able to hit several free throws to seal the game, 58-62. Hargrave was lead by Avery Johnson with 18 points and 13 rebounds. Javonte Rankin added 15 points and 4 steals.
In the third place game the Tigers squared off against Sovereign Grace. Hargrave was able to jump out early and led the game by as many as 18 point in the first half before going to halftime with a 12 point lead. The third quarter belonged to Grace, as they trimmed the lead to six points. The Tigers were able to hang on to the six point lead behind 11 fourth quarter points from Jordan Gee to win 85-79. Hargrave was lead by Jordan Gee with 28 points and 12 rebounds. Avery Johnson chipped in with 16 points and 14 rebounds and Javonte Rankin finished with 19 points and 4 assists.
