Varsity Basketball Wins VIC D2 Conference Tournament Title for First Time In Modern Era

Ben Veshi

The Tigers faced off against North Cross for the third time this season when they met at Roanoke College yesterday for the VIC D2 Conference Tournament Championship game. The game started out slow with both teams struggling to find their offensive rhythm. Hargrave took a 12-9 advantage into the second quarter where they were able to push their lead to 30-20 before the half with a buzzer beater from just inside half court by David Garey.

Hargrave utilized a 22-9 third quarter to push their advantage to an insurmountable lead that North Cross was never able to overcome. Incredible defense, rebounding, and unselfish offense guided the Tigers to the 74-39 victory. Hargrave improves to 25-3 with the win.

Notable Performances Include:
DJ Myers ’18–19 points, 9 rebounds
Tre King ’18–17 points, 10 rebounds (All-Tournament Team)
Malik Morgan ’17–9 points, 3 rebounds
Grayson Tejeda ’17–7 points, 6 rebounds
John Kirkpatrick ’18–7 points, 3 rebounds (All-Tournament Team)
David Garey ’17–5 points, 4 rebounds, 3 steals (All-Tournament Team)

According to Coach Veshi: “I couldn’t be more proud of this group of young men. All season long, on and off the floor, they have been the most coachable group of guys. Even when we battled through adversity and a slow start this afternoon, we really turned it up and controlled the pace. We made our opponent play Hargrave Basketball. The sky is the limit for this group, this season, and in their futures. I’m just honored to have the opportunity to be a part of something this special and to help continue the success that Hargrave has built, both on the basketball court and in the entire school. Now it’s time to shift our focus to the VISAA Division 2 State Tournament!”

The Tigers will be gearing up for the VISAA Division 2 State Tournament. The brackets should be released sometime Sunday afternoon/evening and Hargrave will learn who they will face in the First Round.
