Varsity Soccer vs. Carlisle School

The Hargrave Tigers (5-9-1, 3-3) fell short in overtime to the Carlisle Cheifs (10-2-4, 4-0-1) on Tuesday by a final score of 2-1. Carlisle’s James Hoy scored the game winner with under a minute to play in the second overtime to keep the Tigers winless in their last four matches.

Carlisle took the lead in the second half of play with just over 30 minutes to play at the 49:39 mark. An unfortunate handball in the box for the Tigers brought Carlisle’s Cody Franklin to the spot for the ensuing penalty, and the Chief’s midfielder was able to comfortably put away the go-ahead goal.

Hargrave increased their shot output during the second half to 12 shots, compared to six in the first half, but were unable to capitalize on numerous opportunities. Hargrave goalkeeper Brad Faught kept the Tigers close with five second half saves to maintain 1-0 deficit.

One last chance is just what the Tigers needed as junior forward Edwin Choi scored the game tying goal to send the match to overtime with just under a minute to play. Senior midfielder Scott Dinius set up the Choi goal as he collected the ball in the midfield, drove forward, and then put Choi in on goal with a perfectly threaded through-ball between the Carlisle defense. Choi made good on his last shot of six on the day as he netted the goal to the right of the Carlisle goalkeeper from just inside the penalty area.

With the overtime periods underway the first extra time would end scoreless with Hargrave having one shot attempt that couldn’t find the mark. With under a minute remaining Carlisle’s Hoy would tally the game winner on the back post from a Franklin cross off of a free-kick just along the endline deep in the right corner of the Tiger’s defensive third.

With the Hoy goal coming late into the second overtime the Tigers were unable to create any further chances in an attempt to find the equalizer.

The Tigers finished the match outshooting their opponent 19-16, but gave up two shots in the second overtime including the crucial game winning tally. The foul that begun the play was only the Tiger’s seventh compared to 17 total fouls from the Chiefs.

Tiger goalkeeper Brad Faught finished with nine total saves on 11 shots on goal from Carlisle. Hargrave shot 6 of their 19 shots on goal forcing Carlisle goalkeeper Sydnor Trent into five saves for the match.
