Summary

Hargrave 3 – Fishburne 2

With two goals in the final ten minutes of play the Hargrave Tigers were able to secure a hard-fought and well-played victory over Fishburne, 3-2.

Throughout the contest the Tigers were able to control the majority of possession, and worked the ball around the field superbly. Due to their outstanding movement with the ball the Tigers were able to consistently put pressure on the Fishburne defense.

The Tigers would open up the scoring on a goal from Junior Paul Spakauskas (1G,1A) 13 minutes into the contest. Junior Captain Josh Splinter (2A) assisted on the play when he sent a lofted ball off of a corner kick into the box. The crossed ball found its way bouncing out to Spakauskas who was waiting on the edge of the box, and hit a first time volley into the top corner of the goal.

Despite the great effort, though, the Tigers lead would soon turn in their opponent’s favor, as Fishburne would add the next two goals of the game. Eight minutes before halftime Fishburne would draw even with a shot from a difficult angle from the right corner of the box that found its way over the outstretched hands of goalkeeper Nathan Bloom. Then, 30 seconds into the second half Fishburne would take the lead with seemingly the same type of goal, but this time coming from the left corner of the box.

Although, the Tigers did not let down, and took control soon there after creating numerous chances at their opponent’s goal. Combined with a superb defensive effort from defenders Nick Wynne, Adam Crook, and Patrick Galindo, and a gritty goalkeeping performance from Bloom, who made several key saves throughout the game, the Tigers were able to complete the comeback with less than ten minutes remaining in the match. Newcomer Nick Barr (1G,1A) notched the game at 2-2 with eight minutes remaining in the game with a superbly struck ball into the opposite corner of the net past the outstretched hands of the Fishburne goalkeeper. Barr received a pass off a free kick from Splinter, adding his second assist of the game, which bounced its way in behind the Fishburne defense to the right side of the box. Barr ran onto the loose ball and knocked in the game tying goal. Less than four minutes later Senior Forward Philippe Armand (1G) added the game winner for the Tigers with a left footed strike to the near post of the goalkeeper. Armand was assisted on the play by Spakauskas who sent a crossed ball in towards the right side of the goal where it was continued on by Barr to the left side of the goal. Armand received the pass uncontested, and hit home the finish to give the Tigers the lead and the win, 3-2.

Midfielders Cody Cameron, Scott Dinius, Austin Newman, and Tumi Demuren also contributed superbly throughout the match to help secure a hard-fought victory.
