Varsity Soccer vs. George Washington High School

Hargrave 1 – GWHS 3

The Hargrave Varsity Soccer Team were unable to overcome a two goal deficit after a well-fought second half of play. The Eagles of George Washington HS inflicted much of the damage to the Tigers during the first half of play. The Tigers were unable to create any opportunities to challenge their opponent, and soon found themselves to be trailing seven minutes into the game. The Eagles would then add their second goal of the contest ten mintues before the halftime whistle.

Trailing 2-0 to begin the second half the Tigers were quickly caught flat-footed, and found themselves down 3-0 30 seconds into the half. Despite the early goal and the three goal deficit the Tigers did not lower their heads, and quickly began to find form. Throughout the last 25 minutes of the game the Tigers soon created several opportunities to challenge the GW defense. Forward Nick Barr rose to the occasion being the primary threat for the Tigers up front, and creating havoc for the GW defensive line with his speed and quickness with the ball. Set up by a superbly hit ball in behind the defense by Senior Philippe Armand, Barr was able to run down the pass beating his defender to the ball. With a defender on his back Barr headed the ball perfectly down to his feet, and with a single bounce squeezed the shot past the opponent’s goalkeeper challenging from off his line.

Although the contest would end with the 1-3 scoreline the Tigers were able to create several other close opportunities that could have easily brought the game to terms. Barr was denied on another breakaway occasion, set up by a superb one-two pass worked between Armand and Midfielder Austin Newman who finished the play with the through ball to Barr, in which he was able to beat the goalkeeper, but on his finishing shot was denied by the outstretched slide of a GW defender. The Tigers were also able to create a few chances off their corner-kick opportunities, including a loose ball at the top of the 18 yard box that Junior Tumi Demuren hit first time just missing wide of the net.

With the loss the Tigers move to 4-4 on the season with one game remaining.
