Hargrave 1 – GWHS 2
The Hargrave Varsity Soccer Team opened the season with a hard-fought defensive effort, but fell just short with a 1-2 loss to the George Washington Eagles with a goals in the opening minutes of each half.
The Tigers opened to a slow start against a very competitive Eagles team. Five minutes into the first half the Eagles would open the scoring. Despite the early 1-0 advantage for their opponent the Tigers were able to avoid any breakdowns, and held the score to 1-0 just before the halftime whistle. With less than a minute remaining in the half Senior Captain Cody Cameron (1G) pulled the Tigers even. From a free kick Senior Captain Chris Martelli (1A) hit a ball from around midfield that found its way to the left wing deep into the Eagles defense. Cameron collected the pass, and drilled a low shot into the opposite corner of the goal.
To begin the second half the Tigers were once again caught off guard when the Eagles added their second goal of the match two minutes in. The goal would turn out to be the game winner for the Eagles.
