The Hargrave Varsity Soccer Team had a hard-fought loss to George Washington High School on Monday, 0-2.
Despite GWHS maintaining majority of possession throughout the contest, the Tigers played tough, aggressive soccer continually putting pressure on the ball, and giving their opponent no easy time with the ball. With this tough work ethic the Tigers took GWHS to a 0-0 draw at the end of the first half. Even though GWHS substantially outshot the Tigers throughout the game and in the first half, the Tigers saw an opportunity to take the lead 1-0 come up short off of a Cody Cameron shot off the post.
Throughout the second half the Tigers continued to play well and fight for possession of the ball. GWHS would strike though 13 minutes into the second half off of a well taken free kick from 20 yards out that just squeeked in past the post for the goal. Six minutes later GWHS would hit again to take the 0-2 lead.
Throughout the majority of the match the Tigers found themselves back on the defensive, but with continued hard-fought pressure gave GWHS several scares with opportunities close to their opponent’s goal. Although, the Tigers just couldn’t get their foot on the ball for a clean shot and were left with wanting more from the scoreless tally.
Goalkeeper Geofrey Frazier finished with another superb game in the net for the Tigers, making 15 saves off of 24 shots, as did the Tiger back four of Josh Splinter, TJ Johnson, Charles Amos, and Nick Wynne. Forwards Todd Robinson, James Yu, Kayode Ogunnaike, and midfielders Austin Newman, Tim Weir, Garret Torney, Cody Cameron, and Heath Light also had a superb games, as well creating opportunities for the Tigers on the offensive, and working hard to put pressure on the ball on the defensive.
The Tigers record now moves to 5-7-1 overall, and 3-3 in conference play. The Tigers return to action on Wednesday to take on Franklin County High School in a non-conference match-up. Kick-off time is 4:30.
