Varsity Soccer vs. Holy Cross

Hargrave 3 – Holy Cross 0

The Tigers bounced back after their first loss of the season with an impressive win against conference opponent Holy Cross on Tuesday, 3-0. The Holy Cross match was the Tiger’s second game in two days, but neither the fatigue nor the 90 degree weather seemed to bother the home side as they played to keep their hopes alive for a first place regular season finish.

The Tigers jumped out early as senior Tony Cain scored in the 2nd minute from an Alec Field free-kick just inside the Gaels’ half. Cain was able to collect the Field long-ball in the box, and hit a perfectly shot volley into the back of the net to give the Tigers the 1-0 advantage. Junior Captain Scott Dinius would net the Tiger’s second 15 minutes later from a Nick Barr and Edwin Choi combo up the field. Barr would send a perfectly placed through-ball down the center of the field in behind the Gaels’ defense, and ahead of the run of Dinius who was then able to collect the ball and hit a blast into the opposite corner of the goal. The Tigers would head into the half with the 2-0 lead as they outshot their opponent 7-2.

As the second half was underway the Tiger defense continued to play superbly in the back. A combined defensive effort from Alec Field, Austin Hirschfield, Andrew Shin, Adam Crook, and senior Captain Nate Anglin only allowed 5 total shots throughout the game to their opponent. Goalkeeper Nathan Bloom was only forced to make 1 save throughout the contest. Senior Captain Nick Barr topped off the scoring for the Tigers as he netted an unassisted strike in the 53rd minute. Barr created his own opportunity as he followed up a turnover on the Gaels’ right flank deep within their defensive end; stealing the ball, dribbling forward, and hitting a well-struck ball low to the keeper’s near post for the score. The Tiger’s would go on to hold the 3-0 advantage to move to 5-1-1 in conference play, and with a win on Thursday against Fishburne secure a first place regular season finish and home field advantage throughout the conference playoffs.
