Summary

Hargrave 1 – Holy Cross 2 in OT

With a breakaway goal in the early moments of the first overtime period the Gaels of Holy Cross defeated the Hargrave Tigers 1-2. The game came as a very physical meeting between the two sides that were very evenly matched on the field position for position. The physical and equably matched play resulted in a thriller for both sides as the result of the game could have swung either way. Unfortunately, the Tigers were left disappointed with the overtime loss.

The first half came as no surprise as both teams immediately showed that the match would be no easy task for either side. Play balanced back and forth between the Gaels and the Tigers; both sides with a share of the ball possession, and both sides with opportunities at their opponent’s net. Although, the halftime whistle would bring the first 40 minutes to a close at a scoreless tie. The Tigers presented 13 shots during the first half of play, but were only able to force the Gaels’ goalkeeper to make one save.

As the second half began the Tigers were the first to gain the advantage of the break, and the second half momentum. Four minutes into the half junior midfielder Mike Badolato struck for the Tigers off of a loose ball from a Josh Splinter corner kick. A Holy Cross defender was able to win the initial cross in the air, but the ball found its way onto the path of Badolato who struck home the first time volley from just inside the box. The Tigers continued to play well after taking the 1-0 lead, but once again found trouble finishing their opportunities at the Gaels’ goal. Although, the Gaels’ defense did a superb job at making the Tigers shots difficult to release. The Tigers finished with 19 recorded shots in the match; one of which came on the Badolato goal while only three others were placed on goal, but all denied by the Gaels’ goalkeeper. The Gaels, though, created several opportunities of their own forcing the Tiger defense into difficult situations, including several near misses and five saves from the Tiger keeper Nathan Bloom. With around 15 minutes remaining in the match the Gaels would strike after a loose ball found its way to the far side of the field from a Gaels’ corner. The return cross back into the box found the Gaels’ Abramoric for the uncontested volley into the back of the net. With the score drawn at 1-1 the closing whistle capped off a hard-fought regulation from both sides. The match would head to overtime, and no sooner as it started the Gaels’ Michael Scott found room off a long ball deep into the Tiger’s defensive third and sent home the game winner with the breakaway. Down a goal in the overtime periods the Tigers pressed to find the equalizer, but were unable to capitalize as the last whistle brought the match to a close. The Tigers, though, played a well-fought game and will look forward their October 19th rematch with the Gaels. It will be expected to be another great match between to the two sides.

With the loss the Tigers move to 4-2 overall, 4-1 in conference play on the season. Their next scheduled match-up will take them to Timberlake as the Tigers look to bounce back with a win.
