Varsity Soccer vs. Holy Cross School

Hargrave’s Mike Dalpini and Scott Dinius each recorded two goals and one assist on their way to lead the Tigers (6-10-1, 3-3) to a 4-1 win over Holy Cross in their final match of the regular season. Two other Hargrave seniors also recorded a multi-point game as midfielder Tian Yang finished with three assists and defender Austin Koeneman finished the afternoon with two assists.

Dinius opened the scoring for the Tigers with his 17th goal of the season at the 20:17 mark as he collected a free-kick pass at the edge of the Holy Cross penalty area. After the initial trap Dinius split two defenders as he turned with his second touch to create the open shot and tally the 1-0 advantage. Dalpini and Koeneman were credited with the helpers on the Dinius goal as they combined to begin the dead ball from about 40 yards out.

Dalpini would record the Tiger’s second with just over two minutes remaining in the half as he ran onto a through-ball from Yang to split the Holy Cross defense. Dalpini made good on the pass, and put away the breakaway opportunity for the Tiger’s second of the match.

Hargrave outshot Holy Cross 15-0 during the first half of play, but were only able to record four total shots on goal.

Holy Cross grabbed one back late into the second half with just over 14 minutes remaining off of a defensive turnover in the Tiger’s penalty area. Holy Cross’ Martin Kerekes tallied the goal for the Gaels to put pressure on the Tigers late and bring the score to 2-1.

Dalpini, though, recorded his second of the match just over six minutes later following the Kerekes goal to give Hargrave the 3-1 advantage. The Dalpini goal started from a pass down the right wing from Koeneman that found Yang on the run. Yang then sent a low, driven ball across the top of the penalty area to find Dalpini from about 20 yards out. Dalpini collected the Yang pass, and on his next touch tallied the goal in the upper left corner.

Dinius would then secure the insurance goal for the Tigers with just over three minutes remaining on yet another through-ball from Yang coming down the center of the field. Yang played the pass into the path of Dinius who then broke through two Holy Cross defenders on a quick touch to put himself in on a breakaway opportunity of his own. Dinius put away his second of the game and 18th goal of the season to give the Tigers the 4-1 win.

Hargrave finished the match outshooting their opponent 28-5, though, goalkeeper Brad Faught was forced into four second half saves as all five Holy Cross shots were on goal.

Hargrave finishes the regular season with win as they approach the VIC playoffs and their first round match-up with division leader and No. 3 ranked Eastern Mennonite.
