Varsity Soccer vs. North Cross School

The Hargrave Varsity Soccer Team got off to a slow start on Thursday when they dropped their season opener 0-4 to North Cross.

Opportunities were scarce for the Tigers who finished with only 6 shots in the game, while giving up 11 to their opponent. Goalkeeper Garret Torney was credited with 5 saves in the game.

North Cross opened the scoring 20 minutes into the first half, and added a second before the half with just under seven minutes remaining. The second half of play resulted with much of the same storyline as North Cross would add two more goals, including a penalty kick, to close out the Tigers 0-4. Matt Gregory of North Cross made the Tigers pay as he scored three of the four goals, completing the hat-trick against a depleted Tiger’s defense.

The Tigers put forth a hard-fought effort, but could never quite seem to find the flow of the game on the field. A much renewed intensity in the second half was halted when the Tigers went down 0-3 due to a penalty kick call 15 minutes in. Although the Tigers continued to work hard and press the North Cross defense for scoring opportunities, the Tiger’s offense never could quite find the chances to score.

The Tigers (0-1 conference, 0-1 overall) will return to action on Monday, April 4 as they travel to Altavista for a non-conference match-up. Kick-off begins at 4:30.
