Varsity Soccer vs. Roanoke Catholic

The Hargrave Tigers kicked off their first home game of the season with a 7-0 win over Roanoke Catholic on Thursday. For the second consecutive game all of Hargrave’s goals came at the feet of different goal scorers as the Tigers put 15 of 21 shots on net to test the Catholic goalkeeper on nearly every shot.

Senior midfielders Scott Dinius and Austin Newman led the way as they combined for two goals and five assists on a third of the Tiger’s shots. Fellow seniors Tian Yang and Chris Bowser both recorded a goal and an assist while seniors Austin Koeneman and Seth Spears, and junior Kenny Mattimore each were credited with a helper. Forwards Dong Eun, Edwin Choi, and senior JD Skinner each recorded a goal to round out the scoring for the Tigers.

For the first 15 minutes of the game the Tigers found themselves in a midfield battle for possession of the ball, and trying to get a feel for the Catholic defense. Though, once that happened the Tigers were able to find several scoring opportunities. Choi opened the scoring for Hargrave at the 15 minute mark on a beautifully played through ball from Dinius to give the Tigers the 1-0 advantage. Eight minutes later Skinner followed with a goal of his own from a Newman cross from the right flank that began with an on-target throw-in from Koeneman to Newman as the ball hugged the line to create the opportunity. Less than four minutes later Yang tallied his second goal of the season from another Newman dish off of a corner kick. The Tigers finished the first half with only seven shots, but put five on frame and three in the back of the net. Hargrave goalkeeper Nathan Bloom was tested three times on four shots from Catholic, but collected all three opportunities with ease.

Eun opened the scoring for the Tigers at the 54:20 mark of the second half from Dinius’ second helper of the day, and yet another assist from Newman for his third. Dinius then followed suit for a breakaway goal of his own ten minutes later with the help of a Yang through-ball that started with Mattimore. Just over four minutes later Newman rounded out his points for the day with a goal of his own with the help of Spears and Bowser. With just over a minute left the Tigers would finish off the scoring as Bowser followed his previous assist with an unassisted tally from the right flank. The Tiger’s Nathan Bloom finished with three saves on the day after 60 minutes in goal. Back-up keeper Bradley Faught entered in net for the remaining 20 minutes for the Tigers and recorded two saves to close out the shut-out for the home team.
