Varsity Soccer vs. Roanoke Catholic

Hargrave 4 – Roanoke Catholic 0

The Hargrave Varsity Soccer Team improved to 7-2-2 in conference play on a chilly Thursday evening with a 4-0 win over Roanoke Catholic.

The Tigers once again came out firing early on into the first half with numerous opportunities in front of the Catholic net, and with a Austin Newman goal 11 minutes after the opening whistle the Tigers took a one goal lead. The Newman goal was set up by Captain Josh Splinter and forward Dong Myung Eun when Eun received a short pass down the right side from Splinter. Eun then drove into the box, and sent a low pass across the field to Newman who ran onto the pass just outside the box striking the ball first time with a well-placed hit into the back of the net. With the 1-0 lead in hand it took the Tigers until moments remaining in the first half to find the net once again. Opportunities were left wanting as several one on one occasions with the Catholic goalkeeper were shot straight into his hands making it easy for the save to be made. Although, with less than three minutes remaining in the first half the Tigers would break through for the second of the match on a Mike Badolato goal. Badolato collected a throw-in from left winger Garret Jennings, and drove the ball forward taking on several Catholic defenders. The Tiger midfielder, adding his 15th goal of the season, then found space for the shot and made good on the opportunity from just inside the 18 yard box giving the Tigers the 2-0 advantage.

The second half opened to what seemed as a slower pace for both sides. Play was consistent for the Tigers as they attempted to move the ball around more in the second half, but once again could not capitalize on their opportunities until late in the game. Substitute Seth Spears finally found the Tigers third goal around the 70 minute mark as he received a through ball from junior Captain Scott Dinius. Spears collected the pass, drove forward, and took on a Catholic defender as he stayed persistent with the opportunity. Spears was able to get the shot off from a tough angle to the right side of the goal mouth, but made good on the opportunity placing the shot to the far post and into the back of the net. Moments later Splinter would add a goal to his earlier assist from a corner kick that found its way into the back of the net off the Catholic goalkeeper.

Collectively the Tigers played well along with another outstanding performance from goalkeeper Nathan Bloom recording his fifth clean sheet of the season. Bloom finished with several key saves in the match to hold the Catholic attack scoreless.
