Varsity Soccer vs. Timberlake Christian School

The Hargrave Varsity Soccer Team continued to play great defense, and, as a result, came away with 1-0 win over Timberlake Christian, on Tuesday.

On a rainy day with wet field conditions the Hargrave Varsity Soccer Team was faced with the task of taking on another very skilled side, in Timberlake Christian. The Tigers, though, with another hard-working effort, gave the number two team in the VIC South all they could handle, and were able to secure the victory.

The only goal of the match came early for the Tigers two minutes into the first half. Off of a throw-in, Captain Charles Amos launched the ball into the box where it caromed off several players before finding its way to the feet of forward James Yu (1G). After the ball came rolling out of the mix, Yu stepped up and hit the ball first time from six yards out, blistering the shot into the corner of the net. The goal would give the Tigers the 1-0 lead, and turn out to be the loan goal of the match.

Play went back-and-forth throughout the entire match, with both teams just barely missing on several scoring opportunities; unable to capitalize due to heroics of both goalkeepers.

The game, though, would intensify in the late moments, as the Tigers dug-in to hold onto the 1-0 lead. Timberlake Christian came on the attack, and, several times, were inches away from tieing the game. The Tiger defense, though, held strong, and with the help of several saves from goalkeeper Garret Torney were able to turn away any Timberlake scoring opportunities.

Then, the unimaginable happened. With five minutes remaining in the game Timberlake was awarded a penalty kick due to a Tiger foul inside the box. Although, the heroics of Garret Torney stayed true to form as he made the save on the ensuing penalty, and secured the 1-0 lead.

The Hargrave Varsity Soccer Team played another hard-fought match, and left every last bit of energy on the field. The Tigers once again came together as a team, and were able to secure the win due to hard-work and determination.

The defensive effort put forth by every player on the Hargrave Team, is one to be commended and rewarded as every individual finished with a solid performance that was intricate in holding Timberlake Christian scoreless, and winning the game.

Hargrave finished the match outshooting their opponent 15-11. Goalkeeper Garret Torney finished the match with 9 saves, and tallied his second shut-out of the season.

The Hargrave Varsity Soccer Team (8-3-1 overall, 7-3-1 conference) will prepare for their last regular season game, on Thursday, as Holy Cross comes to Hargrave. Game time is scheduled for 4pm.
