Varsity Soccer Wins Season Opener Against Westover

Jeremy Eubank

The Tigers opened the season at home on Thursday evening against Westover Christian Academy. The Tigers started out slow, but were able to wear down the Westover team to earn the 4-0 win.

In the 21st minute, goalkeeper John Seepe (Danville, VA) hit a deep punt over the Westover defensive line to left winger Kyle Rose (Richmond, VA) to score the first goal of the game. The Tigers were able to create a chance in the 40th minute by a shot from left back Chad Demarest (Naples, FL) that the Westover goalkeeper was not able to stop cleanly, to take the score to 2-0 right before the half.

“We have ten guys that returned to the Varsity team from last year and added six guys from our JV team. Tonight it showed that we are going in the right direction in development of our program,” stated head coach Jeremy Eubank.

The chemistry and communication showed in the second half as the Tigers were able to open the scoring when Raines Wall (Chatham, VA), in the 68th minute, assisted on a great through ball by Gabriel Powers (Roswell, GA) to make it 3-0. In less than a minute, the Tigers added their fourth goal as Powers was able to finish off a cross from Joahcin Taneus (Brighton, Great Britain).

“To have 32 chances created and to have 26 shots for the game, proves that our guys have bought into the program and we are able to start off the season on a more advance level,” stated Eubank. “In ten years of coaching, I have never seen a team being as in sync for their first game of the season and to have the unity that we have this early on. This will benefit us as we march on during the season.”

The Tigers will hit the road next Tuesday to Waynesboro to play rival Fishburne Military Academy at 4:30 in a VIC Clash.
