Varsity Swimming/Diving vs. Eastern Prep Schools Championships

This past weekend the Hargrave swim team brought the season to an end with a 6th place finish at Eastern Prep School National. This is the oldest and most prestigious high school meet in the country. In fact this was the 106th annual running of this meet. More than 60 teams compete in this meet from more than 13 different states. These states range from as far west as Texas, as far south as Florida, and as far north as Massachusetts.

The best finish ever by a Virginia based team was 7th. This was accomplished in 2003 by Woodberry Forest. This year, the Hargrave team surpassed that mark by placing 6th in the meet. Team awards are given out through 6th place. Further, Hargrave out-scored the 7th place team by 60 points to finish 6th.

The team was led by Andrew Hetzner. Andrew won the 100 Back in High School All-American time of 52.65. This time will ensure that Andrew will be a First Team High All-American. He also place 3rd in the 200 Free. Andrew also will be a High School All-American in this event. Andrew, along with Jacob Dole, Patrick Martelli and Mike Miller, will earn All-American honors in the 400 Free Relay.

Andrew was followed by Mike Miller, who finished 8th in the 50 Free and 18th in the 100 Free. Patrick Martelli finished 7th 100 Fly. He was followed by Graham Wooten who took 8th in the 100 Back.

Clark Sprinkle and Nick DiAndrea did the team proud on the 1m diving board with a 12th place finish by Clark and 17th place finish by Nick. James Eu also finished 18th in 100 Breaststroke. The team’s relays did very well taking an 8th place finish in the 200 Medley Relay, a 5th place finish in the 200 Free Relay, and a 5th place finish in the 400 Free Relay.

In all, the team performed very well and put the Hargrave name out as one of the best high school swimming teams in the nation for the 2005/2006 swim season.
