Varsity Swimming/Diving vs. Mercersburg Invitational

The Hargrave varsity men’s swimming team traveled to Mercersburg, Pennsylvania, on Saturday to race the top ten teams in a three state area. For the last ten years, Mercersburg has hosted a high school invitation meet bringing in teams from Pennsylvania, Maryland and West Virginia. Mercersburg usually wins their invitational every year by more than 100 points. When one team decided not to attend this year, it opened the door for an invitation to Hargrave.

After all racing was completed, Hargrave finished second to Mercersburg by only 44 points. The men were lead by 5th year senior Mike Miller, who won both the 50y Freestyle and 100y Freestyle. Andrew Hetzner and Graham Wooten both claimed two second place finishes. Our 200y Freestyle Relay won, while our other two relays, the 200y Medley and 400y Freestyle, finished a very close second to Mercersburg. The 200y Free relay contained only one senior and was made up of Freshman Jacob Dole, Sophomore Graham Wooten, Senior Mike Wheeler and Junior James Eu.

The 200y Medley relay and 400 Free relay both broke school records. The 400y Free relay broke the school record by 6.5 seconds going an amazing 3:16.51 (Martelli, Hetzner, Wooten, and Miller). The 200y Medley relay missed the All-American time standard by .2 of a second going 1:40.09 (Hetzner, Wheeler, Martelli, Miller).

The team swims again on December 14th at home vs. George Washington and Franklin County High Schools. WE look forward to returning home and continued fast swimming. Come out and cheer for these boys. It will be fun.
