Varsity Swimming/Diving vs. Woodberry Forest School

Hargrave 114 – Woodberry Forest 72

Last night at the Onishi-Davenport Aquatic Center, a Ten year regain came to an end. The Hargrave men’s swimming team improved their record to 14-0-1 by beating Woodberry Forest. This is the first time in the history of the varsity swimming program that Hargrave has defeated Woodberry Forest. In ten consecutive match-ups, Woodberry Forest has defeated Hargrave. On January 27, 2006, Hargrave finally ripped the monkey off its back.

With just two more meet dates left on the schedule, the team must stay focused and determined to do yet another magical feat. Never in the swimming program’s ten year history, has it completed the season without a loss. The team now stands two meets short of accomplishing this task.

The men have worked hard all year and maintained a very tough practice schedule to prepare them for these moments. It has all paid off as they swam very well to gain this victory over Woodberry Forest.

They were led this evening by Junior and last year’s team MVP James Eu. James won both the 200 IM and 500 Free. Also winning two events for the team last night was Sophomore Graham Wooten. Graham won both the 100 Free and 100 Back. These two were followed by Senior Captain Mike Wheeler, Senior Jared Wood, and Sophomore Patrick Martelli. All three of these men won an event and finished second in another. Sophomore Drew Bennett, who has just recently joined the team, was a big contributor by finishing second in the 200 Free to Mike wheeler and second in the 500 Free to James Eu. Freshman Jacob Dole, Freshman Joseph Campbell and Junior Andrew McIntyre were also a huge part of this tremendous and historical win.

The team will next be in action against conference rival North Cross, who is the only other team in the VIC who has won the conference title in the last six years. The men will have to swim well and stay focus to gain a victory at North Cross on the 31st.
