Varsity Tennis Overcome by Appomattox County Raiders

Dr. Jim Tung

In their third road trip in four days, a tired but game Tiger squad suited up to try and even up their record with Appomatox Courthouse HS (ACHS). In a reversed venue on ACHS’s four courts, the team contests led off with doubles play. At first doubles, Cadet Daniel Kim and Cadet Haotian Liu teamed up to lock down a business-like 8-4 victory. The Tiger fortunes at second and third doubles were not so positive, leaving the team match score at 1-2 at the end of doubles play. In exhibition play, Cadet Zach Bunner teamed up with Cadet Walt Kasica to post a 9-7 victory, giving a rosy prediction of next year’s squad.

With the pressure on, the middle of the singles ladder stepped up to produce victories at third singles (Liu), fourth singles (Cadet Rafael Tudela), and fifth singles (Cadet Turner Wall). At second singles, Cadet Frankie Chang come up short, but improved significantly over his earlier performance against Raider Justin Lawson. But the even split in singles efforts was not enough to overcome the previous deficit from the doubles matches.
