Wrestlers claim 8th at Border Clash

Coach Ed Ott

The Hargrave varsity wrestling team attended Border Clash on Saturday, January 17, 2015.

Our team once again gave their best in front of hundreds of spectators and came out looking pretty good for a largely new team. Taking on 16-man brackets with numerous teams around half the state and missing two of our stronger wrestlers, we ended up 8th as a team.

As individuals we had several placers. Cadet Jesse Alston earned 2nd, Cadet Kevin Pedersen earned 3rd, Cadets Layton Decker and Robert Englander each earned a 4th place finish.

As a combat sport one can expect to get a few bumps and bruises. Cadet Chandler O’Connor hurt his knee during one match that bothered him the rest of the day insomuch that he was limping and had a hard time standing in the middle of a match. I considered taking him out for the day. If you have watched the movie “Miracle” about the U.S. olympic hockey team you will understand the scene yesterday as Chandler asked politely but firmly to be allowed to finish the match. One minute later he pinned his opponent. This event happened twice for two matches, both ending in a victorious pin. He may not have walked away with a medal, but he certainly earned himself much respect that day from many coaches.

We will be wrestling again tonight in our gym with three other teams in a Quad match. Feel free to come and support our boys as they face some tough competition. Wrestling will probably start around 5pm.

Looking forward to seeing you there!
