Wrestlers excel at Chatham High Invite

Coach Ed Ott

Our boys did a marvelous job of using what they have learned in practice up against some pretty tough competitors. The tournament was team vs team, much like you’d see in basketball or baseball but the outcome of each wrestler’s match dictates which team gets points and how many.

We lost to Chatham high school and Dan River but won against Liberty, Bartlett Yancey and Appomattox high schools essentially putting us in the middle place out of eight teams. Even while forfeiting two weight classes against each team.

The Nailbiter Match award goes to Cadet Jesse Alston. His opponent was a senior looking to throttle somebody but Alston held him off like a Champion. The first round was chock full of attempts at a takedown but neither could score. In the second period Alston chose down and earned an escape point but again could not find a takedown. For the third period the opponent chose down and after much struggle earned an escape point tieing the match 1-1. First overtime period much like the first period, nobody successfully executing the desired takedown. For the second and third overtime periods again, neither wrestler could score a point. In the case of a tie where nobody scores in overtime periods or a “Sudden Death” period, the win goes to the first scorer of the match. Since our Alston earned the first point, he takes the win.  We are all proud of him.
