Fall 2005 PG Football vs. #19 Bridgewater College

Hargrave Post Graduate Downs Bridgewater College 42-16

Tigers too much for the Eagles

Bridgewater, VA – Five different offensive players and a defensive touchdown helped lead the Tigers to a 42-16 victory over #19 Bridgewater College on Sunday afternoon. Keiland Williams, Mike Ford, Adam Stewart, Vidal Hazelton, and Cody Slate all scored a touchdown on the afternoon both on the ground and through the air and defensive end Darrius Massenburg intercepted a Bridgewater pass to take it in for another touchdown to give the cadets from Chatham another victory and move the Tigers to 7-1 on the season.

Hargrave got on the board early when running back Keiland Williams scored his eleventh touchdown on the season taking it in from 17-yards out to give the PG’s a 7-0 lead early in the first quarter.

On the next drive the Tigers saw running backs Mike Ford, Morgan Green, Cedric Hickman, and Williams pace the ground game by moving Hargrave inside of Eagle territory, before Ford broke a run off of the right side for a 25-yard touchdown run. The score put Hargrave up 14-0 heading into the second quarter.

The PG defense stood tough as always. Paced on the day by a strong effort by the line backers and secondary, Hargrave stopped the Eagle offense sometimes with ease. Doug Wilson, Chris Jaeger, Mario Harvey, Ryan Brinson, Zaire Kitchen, Khalil Conteh, Corey Goodson, Anthony Johnson, Merf Trout, George Helow, Ross Hagberg, Charles Owens, and Rhakeem Smith kept Bridgewater in a hole all day long.

Hargrave went up 21-0 when defensive end Darrius Massenburg dropped back into coverage to step in front of a BC pass attempt. Massenburg scampered 65-yards untouched for his first touchdown of the season. Massenburg along with the rest of the defensive line put pressure on the Eagle quarterback for the duration of the game. Aaron Horace, Ernie Hodge, Callahan Bright, Jerrell Powe, Horace Hubbard, and Justin Mincey took care of the run stopping duties for the Tigers.

The PG’s took a 28-10 lead when quarterback/wide receiver Tim Jones found receiver Vidal Hazelton in the end zone for another score. Jones, who also caught a pass on the day, threw for two touchdowns and completed 100% of his passes to pace the HMA passing game. Jones’ second touchdown pass came when he found a streaking tight end Cody Slate for a 40-yard scoring strike in the third quarter to extend the lead to 35-10. Quarterback Jarrett Dunston also found some open receivers to add to the Tiger passing attack.

The Hargrave offensive line helped create holes in the Eagle defensive line. John Jerry, Matt Hardrick, Mike Harness, Brian Kelly, Andrew Farr, Jon Meldrum, and Andrew Timme all had outstanding days coming off the ball to spring four different backs to over fifty yards rushing a piece. Morgan Green, Mike Ford, Keiland Williams, and Adam Stewart all went for fifty yards or more, while Cedric Hickman, Al Pierce, and Alfonso Wells contributed with over 25-yards each on the day. In fact, Stewart had a score of his own. Newly converted to tailback, Stewart took a run off left tackle before cutting it back to take it in from 32-yards out to give the Tigers a 42-10 advantage.

Wide receivers Joe Nairn, Craig Hayden, Francis Johns, Vidal Hazelton, Tim Jones, along with tight ends Mike Ryder, TC Drake, and Cody Slate had a productive day through the air and blocking on the ground. Hargrave completed three passes for over 25-yards throughout the day to open up the running game.

The special teams were once again solid. Kicker George Pierson kept the Eagles deep in their own territory with his booming kick offs, punter Merf Trout booted some deep ones to pin BC inside the twenty yard line on two separate occasions, and Stephen Phillips connected on five extra points to add to the scoring.

Hargrave moves to 7-1 on the season with the win and will pack their bags for a trip to Blacksburg, VA to battle third ranked Virginia Tech on Friday October 28th. Tech is the defending Atlantic Coast Conference champions and will play Boston College on Thursday evening before taking on the Tigers on Friday. The Hokies are currently undefeated and ranked third in the BCS poll and are looking to solidify a spot in the Rose Bowl to play for a National Championship.
