A LETTER FROM THE ALTAVISTA/CAMPBELL COUNTY
HABITAT FOR HUMANITY PRESIDENT

Hargrave’s Post-Graduate (PG) Football team, known hard hits and aggressive plays, showed their soft side recently when a local Habitat for Humanity group expressed a need. In true Tiger PG Football spirit, the team answered the call and arrived en masse for a Habitat for Humanity Blitz Build on Sunday, October 21, 2012 in Altavista, Virginia.

A Habitat Blitz build features raising a struct from a pre-poured foundation into a recognizable home in just one weekend. The Altavista project site featured two homes framed, roofed and drywalled over one weekend.

Over 50 Hargrave PG Cadets attended the event and quickly provided a small army’s worth of manual labor to a Habitat project site actually spanning four homes. Cadets engaged in roofing, siding and insulation installation. They also painted, dug holes for landscaping and moved a mountain of construction trash to a waste bin.

At one point, Hargrave’s PG Football linemen were lining a row of shingles. Receivers were quickly installing insulation. And, Defense was moving ‘the’ earth with shovels and picks. Most projects were accomplished by the PGs in small work groups, which mostly showcased special teams and practice groups. It was true football spirit.

Additionally, each member of the team had the physical strength to tackle just about any assignment they were given. The Hargrave Cadets were also very energetic and caused great concern at Habitat’s nourishment and hydration station. Additional sandwiches were called in.

“It was a great opportunity for our Cadets to be involved with the Habitat Blitz Build,” said Coach Troy Davis, Head Coach of Hargrave PG Football program. “They loved the hands on nature of the project and the cause in which they were working for. There were several emotional moments for several of us as we learned the situations of the families that would soon be living in these homes.”

Habitat for Humanity is a non-profit group of homebuilders that contribute their time and experience to build quality housing for the disadvantaged. While most of the labor is free, homeowners participating in the program are still expected to finance the materials for the home and contribute 300 man hours to other Habitat projects. Homeowners still have to qualify for a mortgage, usually much reduced since there is minimal labor costs. The group currently claims to be largest homebuilder in the United States, far surpassing corporate builders.
