When Morgan Merrill, ATC, LAT, CES, BLS-C stepped onto campus as Hargrave’s Head Athletic Trainer, he brought with him a vision that would transform how we care for our student-athletes. Having worked with everyone from NFL players and Olympians to Division I collegiate athletes, Morgan understands what it takes to compete at the highest levels—and he’s bringing that expertise directly to our cadets.
But this isn’t just about treating injuries. It’s about building a culture of excellence, recovery, and resilience that elevates every aspect of our athletics program.
A Personal Mission Born from Experience
Morgan’s passion for athletic training didn’t come from a textbook—it came from the sidelines, the weight room, and the painful reality of navigating injuries without proper support. As a high school athlete, he experienced firsthand what happens when schools lack medical staff. Low-level injuries became high-level problems. Pain became confusion. Recovery became guesswork.
"I went into it blind and hopeless at times when I dealt with injury and pain," Morgan recalls. That experience ignited a fire in him: to ensure no athlete would have to face injury alone, uninformed, or unsupported.
Today, that mission drives everything he does at Hargrave—and the results are transforming our athletics program from the ground up.
Five Pillars of Excellence in Sports Medicine
1. Innovation and Growth: Cutting-Edge Equipment for Faster Recovery
Thanks to the generosity of anonymous donors, Hargrave’s sports medicine program has undergone a remarkable transformation. The training room now features state-of-the-art recovery equipment that rivals collegiate and professional facilities:
- Normatec compression boots for enhanced circulation and recovery
- TENS units for targeted pain management
- Therapeutic ultrasound for deep tissue healing
- Shockwave therapy for accelerated recovery
- And much more essential equipment for comprehensive care
But we’re not stopping there. The vision includes portable X-ray capabilities, diagnostic ultrasound, EKG technology, and other advanced diagnostic tools that will allow us to provide even more comprehensive care right here on campus.
The goal? Get athletes back faster. Stop pain quicker. Improve recovery better than ever before.
2. World-Class Partnerships Right in Our Backyard
Chatham, Virginia may be a small town, but it’s surrounded by extraordinary medical talent—and Morgan is putting those connections to work for our cadets.
Through a strategic partnership with Virginia Sport and Spine, Dr. Howell and Dr. Simpson now visit campus twice weekly to see cadets in the clinic. Their expansive skill sets and unique services provide our student-athletes with access to specialized care that most high school programs could only dream of.
Add to that the close relationships Morgan has fostered with local orthopedic physicians who have given Hargrave special attention and support, and you have a comprehensive network of medical excellence working together for one purpose: our cadets’ health and success.
3. Athlete Education: Knowledge is Power
Here’s a truth that every elite athlete knows: the difference between good and great often comes down to what happens outside of practice.
That’s why athlete education sits at the heart of Hargrave’s sports medicine program. Morgan works tirelessly to ensure our cadets understand how to:
- Properly fuel their bodies for peak performance
- Stay optimally hydrated through training and competition
- Prioritize sleep as a recovery tool
- Train smart to push limits without crossing into injury territory
As Morgan often reminds our athletes: "Hard work beats talent when talent refuses to work hard!"
These aren’t just slogans—they’re principles that, when understood and applied, can be the difference between a good season and a championship season, between a nagging injury and a complete recovery.
4. Evidence-Based Treatment and Rehabilitation
Having participated in sports medicine research and worked at elite levels of competition, Morgan doesn’t rely on guesswork or outdated methods. Every treatment protocol, every rehabilitation plan, every recovery strategy is grounded in evidence-based practices that have been tried, tested, and proven effective.
Now, with cutting-edge equipment enhancing these proven methods, the outcomes continue to improve. Our cadets benefit from the same level of care and expertise that professional athletes receive—right here at Hargrave.
5. Unwavering Advocacy for Every Cadet
Whether on the sideline, court, field, pool, or weight facility, Morgan serves as an advocate for our young men. He’s not afraid to plead their case to coaches when rest is needed. He educates parents on proper recovery protocols. Sometimes, he even advocates to the athletes themselves about the importance of listening to their bodies.
His objective extends beyond just treating injuries. Morgan is committed to:
- Protecting our athletes from preventable harm
- Elevating our entire athletics program
- Building resilient young men who understand how to manage their health long after they leave Hargrave
This holistic approach recognizes that athletic training isn’t just about getting back on the field—it’s about developing the wisdom and discipline to maintain peak performance throughout life.
A Track Record of Excellence
Morgan’s resume speaks for itself. He’s worked with:
- NFL and CFL athletes
- Olympic competitors
- Division I collegiate athletes
- Weekend warriors
- High school athletes across multiple sports
Each experience has shaped how he treats athletes and taught him invaluable lessons about recovery, resilience, and the mental side of overcoming injury. More importantly, these experiences have created connections and relationships that benefit our cadets every single day.
When a Hargrave athlete walks into the training room, they’re not just getting help from a competent athletic trainer—they’re getting expertise forged at the highest levels of sport.
Building Something Special
From day one, Morgan’s goal has been clear: elevate the athletics department through quality sports medicine. With innovative equipment, world-class partnerships, comprehensive education, evidence-based treatment, and unwavering advocacy, that vision is becoming reality.
But perhaps the most exciting part? We’re just getting started.
As the program continues to grow and evolve, one thing remains constant: every cadet who walks through that training room door will be met with expertise, compassion, and an unwavering commitment to helping them achieve their athletic aspirations.
Because at Hargrave, we don’t just build better athletes—we build resilient young men who understand that taking care of their bodies is the first step in taking care of their futures.
