Inside Hargrave’s Postgraduate Program: Bridge Year to Success

Not every student is ready for college the year they graduate high school. Some need additional academic preparation. Others want another year to mature. Athletes seek more development time before college competition. Hargrave’s Postgraduate program provides that crucial bridge year between high school and college.

What Is the Postgraduate Year?

A postgraduate (PG) year is an additional year of high school after earning a diploma. Students retake some courses for stronger preparation, take new courses for additional rigor, continue athletic development, develop leadership skills, prepare for military service academies, and mature before college independence.

The PG year isn’t remediation or failure—it’s strategic preparation. Many of Hargrave’s most successful alumni completed PG years before attending top universities and thriving there.

Who Benefits from PG Year?

Several student profiles benefit particularly from postgraduate programs. Young graduates who finished high school at 16 or 17 need additional maturity before college. Late bloomers academically need stronger preparation for college rigor. Athletes wanting additional physical and skill development before Division I competition. Students applying to service academies need preparation for extremely competitive admission. International students acclimating to American education need extra time. Students with inconsistent high school records need to demonstrate sustained academic excellence.

If your son graduated high school but you question whether he’s truly ready for college—academically, socially, emotionally—a PG year might provide the preparation he needs.

Academic Program

The PG academic program is rigorous and purposeful. Students take college prep courses strengthening weak areas, AP and honors courses demonstrating ability to handle rigor, dual enrollment earning college credits, and specialized courses related to intended majors.

Class sizes remain small (averaging 12 students). The 11:1 student-teacher ratio continues. Individual Instruction Time provides one-on-one support. Mandatory study halls ensure consistent work habits. The How to Study program refines skills for college success.

PG students benefit from Hargrave’s comprehensive academic support while taking courses that demonstrate readiness for top universities.

Athletic Development

Many PG students are athletes seeking additional development. Basketball, the most prominent PG sport at Hargrave, has produced 29 NBA players. Football players gain size, strength, and technique. Wrestlers develop additional skills and compete at high levels. Swimmers refine technique and build strength. Other sports provide continued development opportunities.

Facilities include an Olympic-sized pool, Walter Davis Gym (home of championship basketball), strength and conditioning programs, and coaching staff with elite-level experience.

Athletic development goes beyond physical skills. Players learn mental toughness, team leadership, work ethic, and character—attributes college coaches desperately seek.

Basketball: The Gold Standard

Hargrave’s Postgraduate Basketball program is legendary. National Championships in 2004, 2008, and 2016. A 203-15 record over an 8-year stretch. Over 67 PG basketball players continuing at Division I in just 5 years. 29 NBA alumni including Josh Howard, David West, and Donte Grantham.

The Wall of Fame in Walter Davis Gym displays every NBA player who developed at Hargrave. Current PG basketball players see this daily—inspiration for what’s possible through dedication and hard work.

College basketball coaches nationally recognize Hargrave basketball preparation. They recruit Hargrave players knowing they’re getting young men ready to compete at the highest levels.

Leadership Development

PG students aren’t just older students—they’re leaders. Many serve in cadet chain of command as Battalion Commander, Company Commanders, Platoon Leaders, and Squad Leaders. They mentor younger cadets. They model character and work ethic. They take leadership courses. They earn recognition through the General Colin Powell Leadership Medal.

Leadership development distinguishes Hargrave PG students from those at other programs. Colleges and employers seek young men who can lead, follow, communicate, and inspire—skills developed through daily leadership practice.

College Admission Advantages

Strategic PG years significantly improve college admissions outcomes. PG students demonstrate sustained academic excellence over an additional year. They show maturity and self-awareness in choosing to strengthen preparation. They earn higher SAT/ACT scores through additional prep time. They develop stronger applications with more accomplishments. They gain clarity about intended majors and college choices.

Colleges respect PG years. They don’t view them as failures but as wise preparation. Many top universities actively recruit from PG programs like Hargrave’s.

Service Academy Preparation

Service academy admission is extraordinarily competitive. Hargrave’s PG program specifically prepares students for West Point, Naval Academy, Air Force Academy, and Coast Guard Academy. The preparation includes congressional nomination assistance, physical fitness assessment training, rigorous academic strengthening, leadership position experience, character development through Four Pillars, and endorsement from Hargrave leadership.

Hargrave is endorsed by West Point and Naval Academy—recognition of our effectiveness in preparing candidates. We’ve sent 75+ graduates to service academies historically.

Character Development

PG students experience Hargrave’s full character development program. The Honor Code builds integrity and trust. Character Across Campus focuses monthly on core values. Leadership courses teach principles and application. Faith pillar supports spiritual growth. Athletic competition builds mental toughness. Brotherhood creates accountability and support.

Character development matters more than people realize. Colleges want students who will graduate, contribute positively, and represent their institutions well. Employers want employees with integrity, work ethic, and people skills. PG year character development provides competitive advantage.

Social and Emotional Maturity

Eighteen-year-olds vary dramatically in maturity. Some are ready for college independence. Others need additional time. PG year provides that time within a structured, supportive environment. Students learn to manage relationships more maturely, make better decisions consistently, handle stress and adversity constructively, balance multiple responsibilities effectively, and advocate for their needs appropriately.

These life skills matter enormously for college success. Many college freshmen struggle not academically but with independence, relationships, and decision-making. PG students arrive already having developed these skills.

The College Counseling Process

PG students receive comprehensive college counseling. They develop refined college lists based on updated credentials. They submit new applications showcasing PG year achievements. They retake standardized tests with preparation support. They write stronger essays reflecting additional maturity. They obtain new recommendations from PG year teachers. They negotiate from position of strength with enhanced profiles.

College counselors work intensively with PG students, leveraging their strengthened profiles to access better colleges than originally possible.

Financial Considerations

PG year costs money. Hargrave’s boarding tuition is $46,700. However, consider the return on investment. Better college admissions may earn larger merit scholarships. Stronger preparation reduces risk of college failure or transfer. Additional year developing academically saves potential college remediation costs. For athletes, college athletic scholarships can more than offset PG year investment. Character and leadership development provides lifelong value.

Many families view PG year as strategic investment rather than additional cost.

Success Stories

The results speak for themselves. Former PG students attend top universities nationwide including Ivy League schools, top state universities, elite private colleges, and service academies. They earn athletic scholarships at Division I programs. They succeed academically in college after struggling in high school. They become team captains and student leaders. They graduate college and launch successful careers.

PG year doesn’t guarantee success, but it dramatically improves odds.

International Students

International students particularly benefit from PG years. They acclimate to American education before college. They improve English proficiency. They develop study skills for American universities. They experience boarding school before college dorm life. They understand American culture better. They build confidence navigating American systems.

Many international families strategically choose Hargrave PG year as optimal preparation for American universities.

Not a Holding Pattern

Some people view PG year as marking time or waiting. That’s wrong. Hargrave PG year is intensive, purposeful, and transformative. Students work harder than high school. They develop more than they would sitting out a year. They accomplish specific goals strategically chosen. They prepare comprehensively for next challenges.

PG year isn’t about waiting—it’s about becoming ready.

The Decision Process

Deciding whether to pursue PG year requires honest assessment. Is your son academically ready for college rigor? Does he have study skills and time management for college independence? Is he emotionally mature enough for college freedom? Has he maximized his potential athletically? Does he know what he wants to study and why? Could additional preparation open better opportunities?
