Tigers Set Records in Return From Winter Break

The Hargrave Tigers had a historic night on Thursday with one of the best all-around performances in the storied history of the program, routing Combine Academy by a score of 159-63.  The Tigers fell just short of the single game scoring record of 161 set by the 2011 team that featured future McDonald’s All-American P.J. Hairston, future NBA player Dez Wells and Hargrave PG Basketball Hall of Fame member and current assistant coach Jake Ness.  The 159 points scored were the second most in school history.

While they fell just short of the scoring record, this year’s Tigers were able to put their name in the record book still, logging a school-record 51 assists on the evening. Jordan McKenzie (9), Braxton Beverly (8), Brandon Knapper (8), Carson Heinen (7) and Naji Marshall (7) led a group of 12 Tigers that recorded assists on a night where 80% of Hargrave’s field goals were assisted.

The Tigers had huge performances up and down the lineup as every single player that checked into the game scored. Josh Livingston (13 points, 11 rebounds, 3 blocks) and Lewis Djonkam (14 points, 10 rebounds) both recorded double-doubles. Justin Brown scored a game-high 29 points on just 16 field goal attempts and Naji Marshall (19 points, 7 rebounds and 7 assists) flirted with a triple-double. Iran Bennett (15), Trey Kelley (13), Clayton Hughes (13), Sarju Patel (11), and Jordan McKenzie (11) round out the nine players that reached double-figures in scoring.

Hargrave’s defense had just as much bite as the offense, as they forced combine into 39 turnovers, led by Jordan McKenzie (5 steals) and Sarju Patel (4 steals).

The game was the first for the Tigers after winter break. The win pushes their record to 17-1 on the season, and extends their home winning streak to 65 games. Hargrave will be back in action Monday, January 9th at Walter Davis Gymnasium.
