Tigers Split Pair of Meets Heading Into Christmas Break

Benjamin J Veshi

The Varsity Swimming/Diving team hit the road for a pair of meets last week where they went 1-1.

It’s always tough to compete multiple times in a week and the Hargrave squad hit the pool for three meets overall last week, with two on the road. On Wednesday, December 11th, the Tigers traveled to Roanoke, Virginia, where they matched up with Roanoke Catholic. Conditions weren’t ideal and there was a technical error with the timing system, however, that didn’t deter the Tigers from doing their best.

Hargrave fell to Roanoke Catholic, 86-71. “It wasn’t the result we wanted but it also gave us an opportunity to learn,” stated head coach, Amanda Weishaar. “Despite the less than ideal conditions, I was proud of our guys for competing and I know that we will continue to improve both individually and as a team.”

And improve the Tigers did as they made the trip to Lynchburg, Virginia on Friday evening to compete in the VES Invitational, hosted at Randolph College. Five teams competed in total and it was scored as a dual meet. Hargrave won 3 out of 4 dual meets and placed first when all the totals were added.

Throughout the course of the meet, Nathan Higdon ’21 qualifed for states by swimming a 0:58.50 100 yard butterfly and just missed qualifying in the 100 yard backstroke (0.42 seconds away). The Tigers 200 yard relay team just missed qualifying for states as well, despite giving their best effort.

Hargrave swimmers showed continued improvement this week, as noted by Coach Weishaar:

Caleb Chester ’21–dropped his 50 yard Freestyle by nearly a whole second
Ben Gregori ’21–dropped nearly 3 seconds off his 100 yard Freestyle
Nathan Higdon ’21–qualified for states in 4 individual events (200 yard Freestyle, 200 yard Individual Medley, 100 yard Butterfly and 500 yard Freestyle) and 2 relays (200 yard Individual Medley Relay, 400 yard Relay)
Wesley Marquardt ’21–dropped 3 seconds off his 100 yard Freestyle
John Mauriello ’21–swam his fastest 50 yard and 100 yard Freestyle in last meet
Ethan Teluk ’22–swam his fastest 50 yard and 100 yard Freestyle in last meet
Jay Thompson ’21–dropped his 100 yard Freestyle by nearly 6 seconds

The Tigers will be back in the pool in early January following Christmas Break, as they are set to host multiple meets over the month of January.
