Tigers Stifled by Covenant

Benjamin J Veshi

Prior to spring break, the Hargrave Tigers took a trip north to Charlotteville, Virginia to take on Covenant. The Tigers clawed tooth and nail but fell to Covenant, 9-0, to move their record to 0-3 on the season.

Per Head Coach, Jim Tung:

The Hargrave Tigers travelled to Boar’s Head Resort to take on the Covenant School’s squad in Charlottesville.  With a return to cooler Spring temps, the Tigers struggled to get in gear with the ladder playing up two rungs with the absence of three players.

David Chen ’22 (Chiangmai, Thailand) continued to let his big serve and forehand punctuate his game.  While he couldn’t dial in those weapons during the singles match, they proved to be effective in the doubles match where he closed out two games with double aces and kept his opponents honest with a few alley winners. Just as importantly, he provided a sharp edge that complemented the steadiness of his partner, Nick Brown ’25 (Chatham, VA). They were down a break at 3-4 before the Covenant broke serve again and closed out the match 3-6.  At #2 and #3 singles, Conner Henretta ’23 (Roanoke, VA) and Ethan Teluk ’22 (Manlius, NY) had similar experiences.  They both came alive on the doubles side, keeping within a breakpoint for five games until the Covenant duo closed the door on the #2 Tiger duo. Quang Le ’23 (Houston, TX)   proved to be the common factor in the two most exciting matches of the afternoon.  He continues to improve from his complete novice status at the beginning of the season.  He refused to quit throughout a long match at singles and both he and Eryk King ’22 (Chatham, VA) had to reach deep as fatigue became a factor in the doubles match.  Patrick Souza ’25 (Halifax, VA) continued to gain experience with exhibition play.

Man of the Match: Quang Le

Quang Le is recognized for his growth in skill and dogged determination to both improve himself and compete in a way that honors himself, the game, and his teammates.

After Spring Break, Hargrave looks to even up the score against two opponents from earlier this season: North Cross School (Roanoke, VA) with a home match on April 8 at 4:30 at Hargrave’s Landon Tennis Center and hitting the road to Fork Union Military Academy on April 13 at 4:30.
