Tigers Sweep Triple-Double Meet at Home

Katie Markunas

Last night the HMA Tigers ruled the pool. Of the 19 swimmers who swam in the meet, almost every single swimmer dropped time. In the swimming world we get excited about seconds, even fractions of seconds!! Last night our team collectively dropped roughly 5 MINUTES off of individual swims. That’s AWESOME!

The boys continued to defend the pool, moving to a seasonal record of 6-0 with a clean sweep of the triple-double meet we hosted against North Cross and Carlisle. The final scores were:

HMA 130 v. Carlisle 35

NorthCross 102 v. Carlisle 41

HMA 113 v NorthCross 81

Having to reschedule a meet is never fun, but there is no controlling Mother Nature’s plans. Our Thursday night meet was a unique situation for our guys. In the middle of exam week it can be stressful for young minds to think about tearing themselves away from their studies to compete; however, this didn’t seem to phase even our most diligent student-athletes once they got into the pool. We had outstanding swims in every race. As a coach, to watch these boys melt time off, race after race, was truly impressive. Some of the highlights from our fantastic swims:

  • In the 200 freestyle, freshmen Bjorn Brinkley and Scott Kennedy dropped over 45 and 30 seconds respectively, and Junior Annad Khraisat dropped over 17!

  • Then in the 200 I.M., junior Captain Caleb Rogers dropped over 20 seconds and sophomore Kevin White dropped about 22 seconds while clinching his second event’s qualifying time for the state meet!

  • Junior Brandon Bordelon dropped 2 more seconds off of his 50 free to get his first individual qualifying time for the state meet! He accomplished this alongside his six other teammates who swam this event and all dropped time.

  • All of the 100 fly-ers and 100 freestylers dropped time, notably senior Wyeth Davis knocked off about 10 seconds in his 100 Free!

  • HMA took a 1-2-3 sweep in the 100 back, which is a tough event as it follows very closely both the 500 Free and the 200 free relay, so most of the five swimmers who got in for the backstroke were freshly out of a previous race! Congrats to senior Adriano DeAngelis, freshman Bjorn Brinkley, and freshman Ashton Burton who all dropped time and swept the event!

  • The individual swims finished with the 100 Breast, in which all four of our racers dropped time.  There were some outstanding swims from both Brandon Bordelon and Caleb Rogers in this event!

With all of our successes we also saw some really good opportunities to grow! The Tigers will be hard at work to prepare for their next meet, next week January 18th at home. Congrats to all of the swimmers and coaches. Also, a HUGE thank you to all of the volunteers who ran the meet and our loyal fans who took time out of their day to support us!
