JV Basketball vs. VIC Championship Game vs. Eastern Mennonite

May 27, 2011

A very evenly matched game was played Saturday at Lynchburg College. The much bigger flames seemed to own every contested rebound in a game in which neither team ever had a lead of more than 4 points. The flames had a chance to win in regulation but missed their last two shots. Hargrave scored the opening basket in OT on a drive by Josh Rudolph whom the flames seemed unable to keep out of the lane all afternoon, and scored the final basket of the game to finish with 20. We had the ball with a 2 point lead under their basket with 6 seconds left and they put every player up to try to steal the ball. We managed to get the ball in and scored a break away basket to seal the win. The JV team finished the year undefeated at 19-0. They won their second consecutive VIC crown. Nick Barr playing on a severly sprained ankle the whole second half finished with 12 points. Andrew Sigmon had 9, Keiland Harris 7, Brenden Courrier 4, Steven Williams 3, and Jarrod Patterson 1. Though not the most talented individuals I ever coached, they were the best TEAM. Go Tigers!

Win. 15-0 on the season. Regular Season VIC South Champs. #1 seed for the tournament. Hargrave's JV team finished the regular season undefeted and with 30 wins in a row overall over two seasons. We will play Carlisle in the first round of the playoffs at Westover Christian School. The first half was very quickly paced with both teams scoring at will. At the half the score was 36-28. I made too many changes and probably nearly cost us the game in the process. The team stalled in thte 4th quarter, starting with a 5 point lead. We only shot 4 shots and 2 free throws in the quarter and made a total of 3 points. We finished the game with the ball in our hands, playing a game of keep-away. Stats were: Nick Barr 17pts, 3reb, 2ast, and 3 stls with no turnovers; Brenden Courrier 8pts, 3reb, 1ast, and 1stl; Josh Rudolph 6pts, 2reb, 1ast, 1stl; Jarrod Patterson 6pts, 4 reb, 1ast, 3stl, 1block, and played tremendous defense on North Cross's player giving up 6 inches in height; Grant Chandler had 3pts and 2 stls; Andrew Sigmon 3pts, 4reb, 2stls; Afsheen Robinson 2pts; Steven Williams 1reb and 1stl.

Win. 15-0 on the season. Hargrave's JV squad clinched their second straight VIC South regular season title with a convincing win against a very good LCA team. We played our best game of the season at the time it was required of us, and though the score seems lop-sided: the game was not. Josh Rudolph had a very strong game: 20pts, 6reb, 2ast, and 4stls. Nick Barr had his usual reliable game with 12pts, 3reb, 6ast, and 5stl. Keiland Harris had 6pts, 1ast and 6stls. Brenden Courrier added 5pts, 4reb, and a steal. Grant Chandler had 5pts, 2reb, 3stl, and a blocked shot. Jarrod Patterson put in 5pts, 8reb, 2asts, and a blocked shot. Andrew Sigmon rounded out the scoring with 4pts, 2reb, 1stl, and 1block. Steven Williams had 1reb, 1ast, and 1stl. Every player played in the game.

Win. 13-0 on the season. In a well fought game Hargrave emerged victorious. We were without a couple players on the open weekend but the others stepped up their play and responded with a well balanced attack and good defense throughout. We went into the fourth quarter with a 12 point lead and started to eat at the clock. We went to the foul line 9 times in the quarter but uncharacteristically missed 5 of the shots. Keiland Harris had a good game with 9 pts, 4 reb, 2 ast, and 3 stl. Grant Chandler also had a good game with 9 pts and a stl. Brenden Courrier added 2 pts, 2 reb, 3 stl, and a blocked shot as he has entrenched himself as a valuable reserve playing all 5 positions. Steven Williams had 2 pts, 1 reb, 1 ast, and 2 stl. Nick Barr lead the team with 12 pts, 7 reb, 5 ast, and is being mentioned as the hardest player to guard in league. Jarrod Patterson had 2 reb and 2 stls and at only 150 pounds is constantly asked to guard the other teams biggest players. Kris Hagans and David Kanaszka added a rebound each.

Win. 12-0. A great first quarter found us ahead 18-2. I substituted liberally from there on and we won convincingly. Every player played at least 4 minutes, and most played at least a quarter. Stats as follows:

Win. 10-0 on the season. We spent the first half missing shots we usually make. We only made 5 out of our first 30 shots but still lead at half time 12-11. This was so abnormal that I thought it was the end of the first quarter and not the half. We came out better in the second half and finished the game in a more normal manner with 12 and 11 point quarters. We spent most of the 4th quarter in a stall which has become a good weapon for us. Nick Barr had 17 points, Josh Rudolph 10, Keiland Harris 3, Jarrod Patterson 2, and Andrew Sigmon 2. Rebounding Totals: Grant Chandler 3, Jacob Eye 1, Afsheen Robinson 3, Courrier 3, Rudolph 2, Barr 5, Patterson 2, David Kanaszka 3, Sigmon 6, and Zach Boodie 1. Assists: Harris 2, Chandler 1, and Steven Williams 1. Steals: Harris, Williams, Rudolph, and Sigmon had 1; Chandler 2, Barr and Patterson had 4. Jarrod Patterson also had the only blocked shot.
