Varsity Basketball vs. Chatham High School

May 26, 2011

Hargrave hosted cross-town rival Chatham High School in a nail-biting affair that was decided in the last seconds of the game. The Tigers started strong, jumping out to a 15-10 first quarter lead. In a fast paced second quarter, Hargrave was able to extend the lead by three more points to take an eight point cushion into the break. Chatham did not back down, pressuring the Tigers in the third quarter and storming back to erase the eight point deficit and taking a 40-38 lead going into the fourth quarter. The Cavaliers pushed their lead to four points early in the fourth and the game see-sawed back and forth for much of the quarter. With two minutes left, the game was tied until Chatham hit a lay up. As the Tigers tried to answer, a turnover led to a Cavaliers fast break which ended with a foul on a made lay up, allowing Chatham to take a five point lead with 1:15 left on the clock. A key three-pointer for the Tigers cut the lead to two, and after a made free throw by Chatham, the Tigers converted an old-fashioned three point play to tie the score with under 30 seconds left. The Cavaliers turned the ball over on the ensuing possession, giving Hargrave a chance to win in regulation. With 6 seconds remaining, Hargrave was fouled but missed the free throw that would have won the game. Chatham grabbed the rebound, but Danny Smith tied the ball up, leading to a jump ball and the possession arrow gave the ball to Hargrave with two seconds left in regulation. Running a play from under their own basket, the Tigers tossed the ball high to Avery Johnson, who laid it in for the win as time expired.
