Varsity Basketball Opens New Year With Win Over Fishburne

The Tigers returned from Christmas break and picked up conference play against the Caissons of Fishburne Military School. Hargrave was sluggish out of the gate, falling behind 14-12 at the end of the first quarter. The tempo picked up in the second quarter as both teams found thier rhythm on offense and two late buckets put the Caissons up by six at intermission, 35-29. The second half was decidedly Hargrave. The Tigers used full court pressure to generate turnovers and easy scores on the offensive end. Hargrave outscored Fishburne by 10 in the third quarter and never looked back in the 73-58 victory.

Varsity Basketball Victorious Over Patriots

The Tigers were able to overcome a sluggish start to vanquish the Lynchburg Homeschool Patriots, 78-66. Hargrave was slow out of the gate, giving up 20 first quarter points while falling behind by six points. The Tigers came alive in the second stanza, turning the six point deficit into a five point lead at halftime, 38-33. Defense and an uptempo attack saw continued success in the third quarter as the lead stretched to 20 points. The Patriots refused to quit, but could not get the lead below 8 in the fourth quarter before the final buzzer sounded.

Varsity Basketball Earns First Conference Win

The Tigers were on the road for a conference match up with the Gaels of Holy Cross. A very one-sided game saw Hargrave jump out to an early lead and never look back. Twelve different Tigers scored and stifling defense held the Gaels to 18 total points. The final was 62-18.
Varsity Basketball Drops Conference Opener

Hargrave opened the Virginia Independent Conference season by hosting the North Cross Raiders. Last year's first and second place teams battled through four quarters in a hotly contested game. The Raiders came out of the blocks strong, out scoring Hargrave 18-14 in the first quarter. Defensively, the Tigers clamped down in the second quarter and limited North Cross to eight points en route to taking a 32-26 half time lead. A strong inside-out game helped the Raiders tie the game in the third and then take a two point lead into the final period. For the second straight game, Hargrave was unable to convert on opportunities down the stretch and the Raiders sealed the game from the freethrow line to win 67-61.
Varsity Basketball Falls To Dan River

The Varsity Basketball team hit the road for a cross-county game against the Dan River Wildcats. An exciting game, start to finish, began with an uptempo first quarter where the Wildcats led 20-18. Both teams settled into a defensive groove in the 2nd as points were harder to come by and Dan River took a 29-26 lead into the locker room. The Tigers battled back in the third quarter, cutting the deficit to one going into the last period. By four minutes left in the 4th, Hargrave had taken the lead, but stumbled down the stretch. The Wildcats used a timely run and freethrows in the final two minutes to secure a 53-46 victory.

The Tigers kicked the year off in blow-out fashion against the visiting Chatham Cavaliers. Hargrave scored the first 16 points of the game and never looked back.

The Varsity Basketball team lost in a tremendous state tournament game in overtime to Atlantic Shores Christian. The team finished 17-7 on the season and ranked number #9 in the state.
