Varsity Basketball vs. Eastern Menonite HS

The Tigers held their last regular season home game against Eastern Mennonite High School. Emotions were high, as eight seniors were recognized before the game began. Hargrave got off to a slow start defensively, allowing EMHS to jump to a 17-16 lead at halftime. The game settled into a rhythm for the next two quarters, as both teams traded the lead, culminating with a three point deficit for the Tigers at the end of the third period. This deficit was quickly overcome, as Hargrave opened the fourth quarter with back to back three point makes, to take the lead for good, finishing 58-46.

Varsity Basketball vs. Carlisle School

Hargrave was on the road during conference play to face the Chiefs of Carlisle. In a tough shooting night, the Tigers fell 39-46. The Tigers were led by Ben Amos with 11 points and Avery Johnson with 7 points and 9 rebounds.

Varsity Basketball vs. Virginia Episcopal School

The Tigers returned to conference action to host the Bishops of VES. Hargrave jumped out to an early 5 point lead behind tough 1st quarter defense. The Bishops stormed back to tie the game at intermission. The see-saw battle continued, as the Tigers built a 6 point lead in the third only to see it slip away, ending the game tied at 44. Overtime was dominated by Hargrave, as VES was held scoreless in the extra period.

Varsity Basketball vs. Covenant School

May 26, 2011

The Tigers dropped their final regular season game of the year to the Eagles of Covenant. The Eagles, regular season conference champions, jumped out to an early lead, going into half time with a 42-28 lead. Hargrave came out in the second half and continued to battle, but the lead was too large to overcome and the Tigers fell 80-69.

Varsity Basketball vs. Fork Union Military Academy

May 26, 2011

Hargrave stepped out of conference play to host the Blue Devils of Fork Union Military Academy. The Tigers played terrific first half defense, but struggled to score in the second quarter, trailing 21-13 at halftime. A furious second half comeback was derailed by poor foul shooting, as the Tigers dropped 48-55.

Varsity Basketball vs. Fishburne Military School

May 26, 2011

The Tigers took to the road to take on conference foe Fishburne Military School in a tight game. The Tigers fell behind by five at halftime, but fought back to tie the game in the fourth quarter. This charge was led by critical outside shooting and tough defense. FMS took a two point lead on free throws with 30 seconds left in the game. In the final seconds, the Tigers had three shots to tie, but could not convert, falling 52-54.

Varsity Basketball vs. Liberty Christian Academy

The Tigers faced a tough LCA team on the road and fell 38-61. The Bulldogs jumped on top early with deadly accurate three point shooting and never looked back. Hargrave was not able regain its footing until the fourth quarter. The Tigers were led by Ben Amos with 9 points and Mark Barber with 9 points.

Varsity Basketball vs. North Cross School

May 26, 2011

Hargrave hosted the Raiders of North Cross, falling 71-74. In a back and forth contest, the Tigers could never take command of the game. The Tigers were led by Andrew Owusu with 18 points. Also contributing were Danny Smith with 14 points and 7 assists, Ben Amos with 12 points, Ego Ferguson with 11 points and 9 rebounds, and Avery Johnson with 10 points and 8 rebounds.

Varsity Basketball vs. Chatham High School

The Tigers suffered a defeat at the hands of the Chatham High Cavaliers, falling 56-67. The game was characterized by sloppy ball handling and porous shooting by Hargrave. This play allowed the Cavaliers to jump out to an early lead and prevented the Tigers from coming back.

Varsity Basketball vs. Carlisle School

The Tigers continued their win streak with a 60-45 victory over the Chiefs of Carlisle School. The Tigers came out with energy in the first quarter and jumped to a 17-5 lead. This lead was extended by one as the game went to intermission, 27-14. The third quarter saw Hargrave stretch the lead to 24 before finishing the period up 44-25. The Chiefs mounted a final unsuccessful rally before falling by 15.

Varsity Basketball vs. Tunstall HS

The Tigers hosted a return match up against the Trojans of Tunstall High School to close out competition before Christmas Break. In a one-sided affair, the Tigers jumped out early and never looked back winning 55-37. Pressure defense was the key as Hargrave took a nine point first quarter lead, 13 point half time lead, and twenty point third quarter lead. All 11 players played for the Tigers.

Varsity Basketball vs. Chatham High School

Hargrave hosted cross-town rival Chatham High School in a nail-biting affair that was decided in the last seconds of the game. The Tigers started strong, jumping out to a 15-10 first quarter lead. In a fast paced second quarter, Hargrave was able to extend the lead by three more points to take an eight point cushion into the break. Chatham did not back down, pressuring the Tigers in the third quarter and storming back to erase the eight point deficit and taking a 40-38 lead going into the fourth quarter. The Cavaliers pushed their lead to four points early in the fourth and the game see-sawed back and forth for much of the quarter. With two minutes left, the game was tied until Chatham hit a lay up. As the Tigers tried to answer, a turnover led to a Cavaliers fast break which ended with a foul on a made lay up, allowing Chatham to take a five point lead with 1:15 left on the clock. A key three-pointer for the Tigers cut the lead to two, and after a made free throw by Chatham, the Tigers converted an old-fashioned three point play to tie the score with under 30 seconds left. The Cavaliers turned the ball over on the ensuing possession, giving Hargrave a chance to win in regulation. With 6 seconds remaining, Hargrave was fouled but missed the free throw that would have won the game. Chatham grabbed the rebound, but Danny Smith tied the ball up, leading to a jump ball and the possession arrow gave the ball to Hargrave with two seconds left in regulation. Running a play from under their own basket, the Tigers tossed the ball high to Avery Johnson, who laid it in for the win as time expired.

Varsity Basketball vs. Virginia Episcopal School

The Tigers traveled to Virginia Episcopal School for a non-conference game with the Bishops. The first quarter ended with a flurry of scoring as both teams notched 16 points in the opening period. The Tigers used solid defense in the second quarter to limit the Bishops to seven point, to take a 29-23 lead into halftime. The third quarter saw the Bishops cut into the lead by two, setting up an exciting fourth period of action. Offensively, the Bishops were not able to get it going in the fourth quarter and the Tigers took advantage, outscoring VES by 10 in the final frame to secure the victory, 59-45.

Varsity Basketball vs. Tunstall HS

Hargrave hit the road to take on the Tunstall High School Trojans and came away with an exciting 60-54 victory. Starting slow again, the Tigers fell behind by two at the end of the first quarter on a buzzer beating 3 point shot by the Trojans. Hargrave was unable to gain any ground in the second quarter, going into the break down 21-24. The pace of the game increased in the second half, but the Tigers continued to be on the wrong end in the third quarter, giving up more ground and falling behind by four. In the final period, the Tigers began to assert themselves with pressure defense and aggressive offense. The four point deficit was erased by half way through the period and the game was tied with just under two minutes to play. Hargrave hit two baskets in a row and maintained the lead down the stretch by hitting crucial free throw to pull away for the six point victory.

Varsity Basketball vs. Dan River High School

The Tigers fell to a tough Dan River High School team 65-71. The Wildcats jumped out to an early lead, fueled by accuracy at the free throw line and a flurry of early three point makes. Going into halftime, Dan River was ahead 38-28. Hargrave was unable to chip into the lead in the third quarter, as the two teams exchanged buckets for much of the period. A furious comeback in the fourth was held off by the Wildcats.

Varsity Basketball vs. Liberty Christian Academy

May 26, 2011

In a hard fought game, the Tigers fell to the Bulldogs of Liberty Christian Academy, 60-45. Before the game, Hargrave’s two seniors were recognized in their final home game. LCA took a 6 point first quarter lead after hitting a three at the buzzer. This lead grew to 13 at half as the Tigers struggled to find the goal in the second quarter. The Bulldogs pushed their lead to 21 early in the third quarter, capitalizing on Hargrave turnovers. At this point the Tigers rallied back, pulling within 12 points in the fourth before finally running out of time.

Varsity Basketball vs. Roanoke Catholic

May 26, 2011

A short handed Hargrave squad traveled to Roanoke Catholic to take on the Celtics. Hargrave struggled to find a rhythm, falling behind 25-9 after the first quarter and 58-26 by half. The Tigers were foul plagued as well, sending the Celts to the line 16 times in the first half alone. Hargrave was unable to mount a come back and fell 97-42

Varsity Basketball vs. Miller School

May 26, 2011

Hargrave faced conference foe Miller for the second time and fell again, 80-42. The Tigers roared out of the gate, seizing an 18-17 first quarter lead of the second place Miller team. The hot shooting did not last, however, and Miller took a commanding lead in the game, limiting the Tigers to two second quarter points as Miller built a 45-20 half time score.

Varsity Basketball vs. Virginia Episcopal School

Hargrave suffered a 65-39 loss to the Bishops of Virginia Episcopal School. The Tigers were able to keep it close in the first half, as the Bishops took a six point lead into the locker room. The second half was a different story, as the Tigers struggled to score from the field and the Bishops stretched their lead to 40-25 by the end of the third quarter.

Varsity Basketball vs. Carlisle School

May 26, 2011

The Tigers suffered through an ice-cold shooting night, going 13-52, in a loss to the Carlisle Chiefs. The Chiefs jumped out early to take a 16-3 first quarter lead. Hargrave responded by matching the Chiefs bucket for bucket in the second quarter, but they could not cut into the early lead. The Chiefs were able to convert on 8 3-point attempts, while building a large second half lead.
