Varsity Swimming/Diving vs. Eastern Prep Schools Championships

This past weekend the Hargrave swim team brought the season to an end with a 6th place finish at Eastern Prep School National. This is the oldest and most prestigious high school meet in the country. In fact this was the 106th annual running of this meet. More than 60 teams compete in this meet from more than 13 different states. These states range from as far west as Texas, as far south as Florida, and as far north as Massachusetts.

Varsity Swimming/Diving vs. VSIS State Championship

This past weekend the swim team competed in the 32nd Annual VSIS State Swimming Championship. The team swam themselves into second place by scoring 220 points. They were second to Paul VI, who scored 291. Hargrave was followed by Hampton Roads Academy and Collegiate with 209 points and in 5th place St. Christopher’s with 204 points.

Varsity Swimming/Diving vs. VIC/BRC Conference Meets

On Tuesday night, February 7, 2006, the Hargrave swimming team won its second straight conference championship. The team swam very well and accumulated at total point score of 228. This was 145 points more than their nearest competitor. In fact, Hargrave scored 228 points out of 476 total points for the meet. This meant that the second through fifth place team’s total combined score was limited to 248 points.

Varsity Swimming/Diving vs. Roanoke Catholic

Last night the Hargrave men team completed their season with a win over Roanoke Catholic. This victory closed out the dual meet season with a final record of 17-0-1. This is the first time in the school history the team has ended the year with an undefeated record. The team was led by Joseph Campbell and Drew Bennett. Joseph won the 200 free and Drew won the 200 IM. Steve Mckone also won the 50 Free. The team will be in action again on Tuesday February 7 here at home. This will be VIC Conference Championship. The team will be trying to win its second straight title, the 5th in the school history. If you have the time, please come by the pool and cheer them onto a victory. The meet starts at 5:00 PM, and should be a very exciting meet to watch.

The Hargrave men’s swimming team swam to a second place finish at the ODAC High School Classic on Saturday. The 26-team field included the nation’s 6th best team, two state championship teams, two second place state championship teams, and the meet’s defending champions.

The Hargrave men remain undefeated in defeating last year’s fourth best team in the state. Hargrave won 100-70.

Varsity Swimming/Diving vs. George Washington HS/Franklin Co./Halifax

Last night the swim team improved its record to 8-0-1 with victories over Halifax, George Washington, and Franklin County High Schools. The men won every event over George Washington and Franklin County and every event except the 200 Free Relay over Halifax. The men were lead by Sophomore Patrick Martelli, Junior James Eu, and Freshman Jacob Dole all of which won two events. Jacob Dole won both the 50 free and 100 Free, Patrick Martelli won the 200 IM and 100 Fly and James Eu won both the 200 Free and 500 Free. All cadet winning events were Mike Wheeler and Graham Wooten. Mike wheeler won the 100 Breaststroke and Graham won the 100 Backstroke. The men swam very well last night and made Hargrave proud. The men are next in action against state power house Norfolk Academy on January 6th. The men will need to train hard and stay focused between now and than if they wish to stay undefeated.

Varsity Swimming/Diving vs. Mercersburg Invitational

The Hargrave varsity men’s swimming team traveled to Mercersburg, Pennsylvania, on Saturday to race the top ten teams in a three state area. For the last ten years, Mercersburg has hosted a high school invitation meet bringing in teams from Pennsylvania, Maryland and West Virginia. Mercersburg usually wins their invitational every year by more than 100 points. When one team decided not to attend this year, it opened the door for an invitation to Hargrave.

The Hargrave men finished an exciting 22nd in the nation’s oldest swimming meet, the Eastern Prep School Championship. This year the meet completed the 109th running of this competition.

Varsity Swimming/Diving vs. VSIS Championship

The Hargrave men's swimming team performed very well this weekend at the VSIS State Championship. Top Eight performances were turned in by James Eu in the 500 Free, finishing 7th and moving up eight spots from the previous year. Last year he went 5:23 at Paul VI. This year James went 5:09 and finished 7th overall. He had Hargrave’s highest finish in the meet.

The Hargrave men's swimming team has not brought home the VIC title in many years. The meet did not start off very well for Hargrave. Our first relay was disqualified. Also, a member of the relay team was sick and not performing at his best during a second event.

The Hargrave men wrapped up a successful 10-1 season today scoring a victory over Fishburn Military Academy. The score was 110-44.
